Sonoran Pronghorn Technician

Pay: $17.45–$19.23/hour

Position Overview

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is hiring a Sonoran Pronghorn Technician based out of Ajo, Arizona at the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. This position supports conservation and recovery efforts for the federally endangered Sonoran pronghorn through captive breeding operations, habitat management, monitoring, and field surveys in remote desert environments.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in wildlife biology, desert ecology, endangered species recovery, and intensive field work in one of the most remote and rugged landscapes in Arizona. The position involves working under primitive field conditions, including extreme heat, remote camping, and variable schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor Sonoran pronghorn at the captive breeding facility
  • Record animal behavior, recruitment, health, and mortality data
  • Maintain and repair fences, gates, waters, irrigation systems, and other infrastructure
  • Provide supplemental feed and water to captive and wild pronghorn populations
  • Monitor predators and assist with predator management strategies
  • Maintain camera traps and assist with telemetry and aerial surveys
  • Conduct field monitoring and support recovery efforts across southwestern Arizona

Working Conditions

  • Remote field work in extreme desert temperatures
  • Camping and working in isolated areas with limited or no cell service
  • Variable schedules including weekends, holidays, and nights
  • Frequent work in rugged terrain and primitive conditions

Qualifications

  • Interest or experience in wildlife biology, natural resources, or conservation
  • Ability to work independently in remote field settings
  • Experience with outdoor field work and equipment operation preferred
  • Strong communication, organizational, and data collection skills
  • Ability to safely work in harsh desert environments
