Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Project Lead

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is hiring a Sonoran Pronghorn Recovery Project Lead to oversee conservation efforts for one of North America’s most endangered large mammals. This position plays a critical role in managing recovery actions for Sonoran pronghorn populations in southwestern Arizona, including captive breeding, reintroduction, and habitat management.

This is a leadership position that blends fieldwork, data analysis, and program management. The Project Lead will coordinate across agencies, supervise staff, and guide long-term conservation strategy for this federally endangered subspecies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement Sonoran pronghorn recovery efforts, including captive breeding and reintroductions
  • Conduct field investigations such as habitat assessments, monitoring, and wildlife translocations
  • Supervise Wildlife Specialists, technicians, and interns
  • Analyze data using GIS and statistical methods; produce reports and publications
  • Coordinate with state, federal, and partner agencies
  • Manage project budgets, contracts, and equipment
  • Represent AZGFD in meetings and public forums

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management or closely related field
  • Experience in wildlife research, management, or related field
  • Ability to work in extreme outdoor conditions and remote environments
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading wildlife teams and complex field projects
  • Background in captive breeding and species reintroduction
  • Advanced GIS skills for habitat and population analysis
  • Experience operating in remote field conditions and conducting aerial surveys

Work Environment
This position involves extensive fieldwork in harsh desert environments, including hiking, camping, and working irregular hours. Candidates should be comfortable working independently and leading teams in remote settings.
