The Phoenix Zoo is hiring two Conservation Technicians to join the Conservation & Science team at the Johnson Conservation Center. This position supports the care, research, and recovery of Arizona’s native wildlife species, including black-footed ferrets, narrow-headed gartersnakes, Chiricahua leopard frogs, pygmy-owls, desert fish, springsnails, and more. Technicians contribute to both animal husbandry and field conservation efforts that directly support species reintroduction and habitat restoration programs.
Location: 455 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix, AZ
Type: Full-time, non-exempt
Schedule: 8 hours/day, 5 days a week (including weekends), starting at 6:30 AM; occasional fieldwork may require varied hours

Duties include:
- Performing daily husbandry for a diverse range of native species reared for release to the wild
- Feeding, cleaning, enriching, and monitoring animals while ensuring safety, health, and welfare standards are met
- Participating in field conservation projects such as surveys, reintroductions, habitat improvements, and data collection
- Assisting with volunteer and intern training and supporting guest education about conservation programs
- Maintaining records, equipment, and facilities in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures
- Collaborating with multiple departments to support the Zoo’s conservation, education, and outreach goals
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or a related biological field
- Conservation Technician I: at least 1 year of relevant experience (including 6 months animal husbandry preferred)
- Conservation Technician II: at least 2 years of full-time relevant husbandry experience (Master’s degree may substitute for 1 year)
- Strong interest in wildlife conservation, field research, and animal care
- Ability to hike and camp in remote areas for multi-day fieldwork
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public engagement
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, work outdoors in variable weather, and perform physical labor safely
- Valid driver’s license; ability to pass background, drug, and DMV checks and annual tuberculosis test
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience collecting research data, conducting field surveys, or performing wildlife translocations
- Familiarity with laboratory or water-quality equipment (e.g., microscopes, chemistry analysis tools)
- Experience operating 4-wheel-drive vehicles and towing trailers
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
