The Regional Wildlife Biologist is responsible for the coordination and implementation of wildlife management activities within New Mexico’s northeast region. This position will provide management assistance to Department employees, other agencies, the public, and private land owners, and to manage game populations. In addition this position will collect and analyze wildlife population data leading to reports and management and hunt recommendations. The Regional Wildlife Biologist coordinates and implements wildlife management activities and duties, including collection of survey data, development of hunting rules and regulations, and overseeing landowner systems for elk and antelope. The biologist works directly with agency personnel, public lands managers, and private landowners to communicate the Department mission and goals. The biologist applies management strategies to populations of wildlife to meet agency goals within the parameters of social tolerance and political issues in local communities. The biologist guides area personnel through the big game and furbearer rule development process, and must have a thorough understanding of rule development and the internal and external involvement processes. The biologist will present proposals directly and indirectly to inform the state game commission in their rule development process. The biologist may contribute to legislative analysis and is key spokesperson for the area on wildlife management issues. Customers include those interested in outdoor activities and wildlife in particular (hunters, anglers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, citizens of New Mexico). Working Conditions: This position has both office and field work elements. While in the office, extended periods will be spent sitting at desks, computers, meetings, and talking to public by telephone and in person. Outdoors, this person will spend extended periods traveling to various locations around the state. This person will need physical strength and stamina to hike and work at high elevations and drive ½ to ¾ ton 4-wheel drive vehicles over highways and narrow mountainous roads safely. Equipment use will be standard office equipment.



The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate has experience in riding in helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft for wildlife surveys, specifically big game surveys; working in backcountry conditions (for example camping, backpacking, hiking, hunting, wildlife tracking, 4×4 mountainous driving, or other related activities), ArcGIS or other mapping software experience; wildlife and/or wildlife habitat management; and data analysis. Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date. This position is a Pay Band 65. Classification Description Zoologist & Wildlife Biologist Advanced Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology or similar related natural resource degree and two (2) years directly related work experience. Employment Requirements: Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
