Life Support Operator & Water Quality Technician I (Zoo Aquatics)

Pay: $20.75–$24.38/hour

Position Overview

Reid Park Zoo is hiring a Life Support Operator & Water Quality Technician I to support aquatic animal care systems and water quality operations throughout the zoo. This position works with pumps, filtration systems, water testing, and preventative maintenance to help maintain healthy aquatic environments for zoo animals.

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in aquatics, water systems, mechanical maintenance, or zoo operations. Reid Park Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility currently expanding with its upcoming Pathway to Asia project, which will introduce several new species and exhibits in 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate aquatic life support systems
  • Conduct water quality testing and maintain records
  • Assist with preventative maintenance and inspections
  • Support safe handling of chemicals and equipment
  • Work cooperatively with Animal Care and Facilities teams
  • Maintain clean and organized workspaces and mechanical rooms

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Basic understanding of plumbing, pumps, filters, or mechanical systems
  • Ability to work outdoors and in physically demanding conditions
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and on-call rotations as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with aquariums, pools, aquatic systems, or mechanical maintenance
  • Coursework or certifications related to aquaculture, biology, chemistry, or water treatment
  • Zoo or aquarium experience
  • Familiarity with AZA standards
  • Spanish or ASL bilingual skills are a plus
