Seasonal Raptor Field Technician

Position Overview

MTM Environmental is seeking multiple Seasonal Raptor Field Technicians to assist with American Goshawk (Northern Goshawk) surveys on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests during the 2026 field season. Technicians will conduct broadcast call surveys, nest searches, and habitat assessments to support raptor conservation efforts on USFS-managed lands. This position involves extensive fieldwork in remote locations, long hikes through rugged terrain, and dispersed camping throughout the season.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct Northern Goshawk broadcast call surveys and nest searches using standardized protocols
  • Identify raptor species by sight and sound
  • Record observations of raptor behavior, nesting activity, and habitat conditions
  • Hike long distances off-trail in steep, rugged terrain while carrying field gear and water
  • Navigate to survey locations using GPS units and mapping applications
  • Accurately collect, organize, and submit field data, GPS files, photographs, and timesheets
  • Maintain field equipment including GPS units, optics, communication devices, and tablets
  • Communicate regularly with project leads and fellow technicians regarding field progress and safety
  • Camp in remote locations and prioritize safety in all field activities

Qualifications

  • Ability to identify raptors, particularly American Goshawks, by sight and sound
  • Comfortable working independently in remote areas with limited cell service
  • Ability to hike up to 15 miles per day in challenging terrain and extreme temperatures
  • Strong navigation, data collection, and organizational skills
  • Access to a high-clearance AWD or 4WD vehicle (carpooling may be required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field
  • Previous raptor survey experience, particularly in the western United States
  • Wilderness First Aid or similar certification
  • Experience using GPS units and navigation applications such as Avenza, GAIA GPS, or OnX Maps

Compensation

  • Starting at $18/hour, depending on experience and qualifications
  • Federal mileage reimbursement for approved work-related vehicle use
