Bald Eagle Nestwatchers

Posted on October 30, 2026October 30, 2026

Organization: Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD)
Location: Various locations throughout Arizona
Position Type: Seasonal Contract
Application Review Begins: November 20, 2026

Position Description

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is seeking applicants for the 2027 Arizona Bald Eagle Nestwatch Program (ABENWP). This nationally recognized conservation program monitors breeding bald eagles in areas with high recreational activity to support successful nesting and fledging.

Nestwatchers are responsible for collecting behavioral data, educating the public about bald eagle conservation, identifying potential threats to nesting success, and notifying agency biologists of eagles in life-threatening situations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor bald eagle breeding behavior, nest attendance, foraging activity, and habitat use.
  • Collect, organize, and report field observations and behavioral data.
  • Educate recreationists about bald eagle conservation and seasonal breeding area closures.
  • Identify threats to nesting success and coordinate with agency biologists when necessary.
  • Camp in remote field locations for extended periods.

Field Conditions and Schedule

Monitoring primarily occurs along the Salt and Verde rivers, with an additional site in the White Mountains. Nestwatchers work a 10-day on, 4-day off schedule, camping in the field during work periods for approximately four months beginning in February.

Applicants should be prepared for extended remote camping, independent field observations, and variable environmental conditions. Some monitoring locations require four-wheel-drive access. AZGFD does not provide housing during days off.

How to Apply

Interested applicants should email their current resume to baldeagle@azgfd.gov. Applicants will then receive an additional questionnaire and a draft contract for review.

Initial application review begins November 20, 2026. Applications will continue to be accepted until all positions are filled by qualified individuals.
