NEW Solutions is seeking an experienced Archeologist to support the National Park Service at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona.
This position will serve as the on-site Archeological Monitor during construction of the Secondary Border Barrier within the monument. The Archeologist will help protect cultural resources through construction monitoring, archaeological surveys, field documentation, condition assessments, and damage assessments.

Primary Responsibilities
The Archeologist will:
- Monitor ground-disturbing activities associated with secondary border barrier construction.
- Review construction plans, project documents, and mitigation measures to identify potential impacts to archaeological resources.
- Monitor excavation, grading, trenching, and other construction activities with the potential to affect cultural resources.
- Immediately report archaeological discoveries, artifacts, features, or human remains to appropriate NPS leadership.
- Conduct damage assessments of natural and cultural resources affected by construction.
- Document impacts using photographs, maps, GPS locations, field observations, and written reports.
- Conduct pedestrian archaeological surveys in areas adjacent to construction.
- Identify and document previously unrecorded archaeological resources.
- Record archaeological features, prepare field maps and forms, and conduct basic artifact identification and analysis.
- Conduct condition assessments of known archaeological sites within or near construction areas.
- Document impacts from erosion, vibration, mechanical disturbance, and other construction-related activities.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- At least 10 years of professional archaeological fieldwork experience, including construction monitoring in the U.S. Southwest; OR
- An MA/MS in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field is preferred, with a BA/BS acceptable when accompanied by equivalent professional experience.
- Experience working with prehistoric and historic cultural resources characteristic of the Sonoran Desert region.
- Familiarity with NAGPRA, NEPA/Section 106, ARPA, and Tribal consultation processes.
- Qualifications meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeology.
- Proficiency with GPS units, GIS-based mapping, and standard archaeological field equipment.
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
- Experience with Windows, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
Field & Physical Requirements
This is a field-based position in a remote Sonoran Desert environment. Applicants should be prepared to:
- Work in high temperatures and rugged desert terrain.
- Hike multiple miles per day, potentially up to approximately 5 miles roundtrip.
- Carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Work around active construction and heavy equipment.
- Use required PPE, including hard hats, safety vests, eye protection, and appropriate boots.
- Encounter conditions associated with remote desert fieldwork, including wildlife, insects, snakes, and variable weather.
