POSITION OVERVIEW:

STATE HOUSING AND UTILITIES ARE PROVIDED TO EMPLOYEES AT SILVER CREEK HATCHERY. This position feeds and cares for live fish. Cleans rearing tanks and raceways; adjusts water flows; removes dead fish; and checks water quality within the hatchery. Captures, loads, transports and stocks live fish into lakes, streams, and reservoirs. Transports, inspects, prepares and cares for live fish eggs; removes dead eggs; treats with therapeutic chemicals as necessary; maintains water flow and keeps detailed working records. Gathers, compiles, and analyzes fish culture data, size/weight of fish, fish condition and water quality data. Makes computer entries and produces hatchery reports and stocking reports. Communicates with the public, community groups, supervisors, and vendors about department business and issues. Maintains hatchery buildings, grounds, and support systems; performs minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Operates vehicles for hatchery operations (ATV’s, tractor grader, bobcat, dump truck, stocking trucks, fork lift, etc), pick up hatchery supplies, and assists other hatcheries as necessary. Maintains hatchery security; checks for visitors after hours; ensures that visitors comply with rules; reports to supervisors, law enforcement and emergency units if necessary. Participates in training sessions and meetings that may require travel and overnight stays. May supervise seasonal employees. Designs and fabricates specialty tools/equipment and additions or modifications to hatchery equipment. Builds and/or repairs screens, crowders, and segregation boxes. Promotes a safe and productive work environment as well as a quality experience for visitors to the hatchery.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate will have knowledge of/in: cultured trout behavior; biology; propagation and transportation techniques; trout diseases and treatment methods. The ideal candidate will be skilled in techniques of daily care including, feeding, cleaning, inventory tracking and record keeping. The candidate will have the abilities for maintaining and repairing hatchery facilities and equipment. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in a wildlife science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and one year of fish hatchery experience; OR two years of experience equivalent to a Fish Culturist I.
