This position is part of the Mexican Wolf Program. As a Wildlife Biologist you will be serving on a diverse interagency field team and will be responsible for monitoring, managing, and researching Mexican wolves and their behavior, ecology, and conservation; and assessing the potential impacts of gray wolf recovery in the southwestern US.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
The work requires physical exertion in areas containing potentially dangerous wildlife. The employee endures periods of prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, and climbing are required, as are lifting, carrying, and setting up equipment. Items weighing up to 10 pounds are handled occasionally and items 40 pounds or more are handled routinely. Travel is carried out in cars and trucks, occasionally in off-road vehicles, small fixed and rotary-winged aircraft, horseback and foot. The work is performed outdoors and in an office setting. Outdoor work involves remote sites, dangerous situations, and moderate risks and exposure to a variety of outdoor elements requiring the use of special protective clothing or gear. These risks or discomforts are associated with adverse weather or terrain conditions; long work days; use of field equipment such as ATVs and snowmobiles; horseback riding; and riding in fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. Temperature extremes vary from below zero to above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Considerable driving and hiking is involved while performing field assignments. Outdoor camping will be required for extended periods of time. The employee is expected to be able to work alone, in remote locations and at all hours. Employee is expected to perform duties in a safe and responsible manner to avoid endangering self, coworkers, or property.

Responsibilities

As a Wildlife Biologist, you will be responsible for:

  • monitoring, managing, and researching Mexican wolves and their behavior, ecology, and conservation; and assessing the potential impacts of gray wolf recovery in the southwestern US.
  • conducting various wolf management activities and documenting biological information
  • preparing procedural, technical, and scientific documents
  • interacting with landowners, livestock permittees, other local citizens, and conservation groups
  • maintaining field telemetry equipment and supplies
Travel Required

50% or less – You may be expected to travel less than 50% of the time in this position.
