POSITION OVERVIEW:
The purpose of this position is to provide park interpretive, recreation, community, and maintenance/development services for the public while protecting park resources.This position is located at the Vulture Mountain Cooperative Recreation Area/Hassayampa River Preserve in Wickenburg.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation Administration, Range or Natural Resource Management, Business, Hotel/Travel/Tourism Management or a closely related field and four (4) years of experience in a park or a related recreational field. An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or related work experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.
Specialized Training, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:
Must currently possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona Driver’s License by the time of hire. “Prior to an offer being made, placement in this position is contingent upon applicant successfully completing a thorough background/fingerprint check”
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Requires expertise in the principles and practices of facility and resource management. Must have demonstrated abilities in team building within a staff unit, communication, and interpersonal skills. Skill in supervising and evaluating assigned staff, including employee development and performance management. Must demonstrate ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must demonstrate skill with Microsoft Office Programs (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel) and ability to become proficient with the Department’s Point of Sale/Reservation and Maintenance Management/Work Order System within three (3) months of hire.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
Post-secondary education in Parks and Recreation. Experience in park management in a regional, open space, or natural resource park environment. Supervisory experience in a park or recreational field.
Preferred Training, Certifications and/or Other Special Requirements:
Preference may be given to candidates who are Certified Parks and Recreation Professionals (CPRP)
Working Conditions:
This position requires exposure to outdoor elements related to weather such as high heat temperatures, etc. There is the potential for exposure to traumatic subject matter with the exposure of the outdoors to our visitors, which could result in search and rescue. This position may require working nights, weekends and holidays
JOB TASKS:
Constantly plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the operation of assigned park while protecting park resources. Assist with development of annual operating budget and capital improvement projects. Coordinates park recreational, educational, and maintenance/repair activities for maximum effectiveness and efficient utilization of staff and facilities including for park users. Ensures park areas, amenities, trails, and open spaces are well maintained and functional. Supervises park staff including establishment of performance goals, monitoring and evaluation performance; assigns work and ensure staff and volunteers are trained to complete assigned duties. Plans, prepares, and revises work schedules and duty assignment according to budget allocations, work load, and statistical forecasts. Frequently resolves complaints from park users and the public; consults with Regional Superintendent(s) to resolve issues. Occasionally acts as a liaison between various agencies, other Department, citizen’s, etc related to operation and management of assigned park. Occasionally conducts overnight youth and family camping events that include overnight stays to help develop nature skills. Communicates with adult chaperones to understand the needs and skill level of the youth. Maintains a status of awareness and responds to deal with unforeseen emergencies or complications in a swift and professional manner while ensuring the safety of every visitor.
