JOB TYPE: Full Time/Permanent

SALARY: $43,888 – $60,320

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Park Education Supervisor provides park system educational services and interpretive, recreation, community, and maintenance at the Desert Outdoor Center for the public while protecting park resources.

This position is located at the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant located at 41402 N 87th Ave, Peoria, AZ

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum education and/or experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation Administration, Environmental Education, Range or Natural Resource Management, Biology, Ecology, or a closely related field and four (4) years of experience in a park, environmental education or related recreation field.  An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements on a year for year basis.

Specialized training, certifications, and/or other special requirements:
Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver’s License. “Prior to an offer being made, placement in this position is contingent upon applicant completing a thorough background check”

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Skilled In:

  • Employee development and performance management; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Developing and evaluating educational programs and curriculum
  • Team building

Ability to:

  • Hike and assist staff with daily maintenance of Desert Outdoor facility when needed (i.e. cleaning, basic maintenance).

Knowledge of:

  • The principles and practices of parks and recreation education and management
  • Microsoft Office products and a variety of social media applications.
  • The point of sale and maintenance work order system within three (3) months of hire.

Preferred education and/or experience:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Parks and Recreation or Environmental Education. Advanced experience working in parks. Experience in recreation educational programs. Experience in park management.  Supervisory experience in a park or recreational field.

Preferred training, certifications and/or other special requirements:
Certified Parks and Recreation Professionals (CPRP) or National Association for Interpretation (NAI)
Working conditions:
This position requires exposure to outdoor elements related to weather such as high heat temperatures, etc. There is the potential for exposure to traumatic subject matter with the exposure of the outdoors to our visitors, which could result in search and rescue. This position may require working nights, weekends and holidays.

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS:
  • Constantly develops, implements, and standardizes the Department’s environmental education and recreation program.
  • Provide standards and guidance to all Interpretive staff for educational and recreational curriculum and program development.
  • Utilize social and traditional media to promote recreational and educational opportunities provided by the Department: Constantly represent the Department as the Nature Education Liaison for all Department Interpretive Ranger Programming.
  • Constantly plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the operation of the Desert Outdoor Center.
  • Ensures facility and surrounding areas, amenities, trails, and open spaces are well maintained and functional.
  • Supervises park staff, establishes performance goals, and evaluates work performance.
  •  Trains employees in work and safety procedures and department policies.
  • Plans, prepares, and revises work schedules and duty assignments according to budget allotments, customer needs, problems, workloads, and statistical forecasts.
  • Supervises, coordinates, and insures user fees are collected and accounted for within point of sale system.
  • Participates in work of subordinates to facilitate productivity or overcome difficult aspects of work.
  • Frequently prepares reports and collects data on interpretive education and recreation program and operating reports including, but not limited to, attendance, revenue, donations, safety.
  • Verifies completeness and accuracy of subordinates’ work, computations, and records including their own.
  • Occasionally conducts overnight youth and family camping events that include overnight stays to help develop nature skills.
  • Communicates with adult chaperones to understand the needs and skill level of the youth.
  • Maintains a status of awareness and responds to deal with unforeseen emergencies or complications in a swift and professional manner while ensuring the safety of every visitor.
  • Occasionally resolves complaints from park users and consults with Parks Operation Manager to resolve issues.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
