POSITION OVERVIEW:

Fieldwork (50%) consists of monitoring endangered Sonoran pronghorn antelope on the Barry M. Goldwater Range in Arizona. Job includes monitoring Sonoran pronghorn using optics and radio telemetry; monitoring sessions follow the sunrise schedule. Office tasks (50%) include managing pronghorn sighting database, report writing, Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) program assistance, and research project development/implementation in relation to Sonoran pronghorn habitat use and management. Lead Biologist will also be responsible for producing the annual report and monthly quality control summaries. Current side research projects include small mammal surveys, avian point count surveys, and bighorn abundance surveys. Future opportunities exist for pronghorn habitat research. Lead Biologist will supervise four Biologists and will work under the direction of the Program Manager. Some weekend work required. Job requires carrying a pack weighing up to 35lbs, hiking on mountainous/rugged terrain, exposure to extreme environmental conditions, and exposure to dangerous organisms. As Environmental Monitor, you’ll be in charge of ensuring that the Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field and BMGR are in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. This includes reviewing environmental plans, participating in inspections, applying for the appropriate permits, tracking air emissions, and tracking hazardous materials inventories.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

5+ years of field research experience demonstrating strong observation and research skills. Strong applicants will have managerial and administrative experience and must be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite and geographic database (GIS) manipulation Orienteering and radio telemetry experience helpful. Master of Science Degree in Biology, Zoology, Ecology or related field. Must have valid Arizona driver’s license, or be able to obtain one (clean driving record).
