Definition: Under general supervision of the Environmental Programs Supervisor, the Environmental Technician (ET), provides support to the Community Development Department’s (CDD) Environmental Protection & Natural Resources Division (EPNR) with general environmental related assigned tasks. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.
Distinguishing Features: The ET duties and responsibilities concentrate primarily on helping maintain the Community’s overall environmental quality. The ET is an environmental “Generalist” that provides support to the CDD-EPNR Environmental Specialists, Senior Environmental Specialists, Environmental Engineers and Senior Environmental Engineers in the conduct of their duties. The ET’s duties are not concentrated in one particular environmental media area, but rather the duties and focus are multi-media which will result in a broad base of environmental knowledge for the ET.
Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be comprehensive list of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.
Examples of Tasks
1. Environmental Quality: Assists the CDD-EPNR staff with a variety of water, wildlife, and air projects including, but not limited to, the following:
- Air Quality: Assists with the collection of air quality samples and conducts other air quality related fieldwork.
- Water Quality: Helps monitor the Community’s water resources for compliance with water quality laws &ordinances, and assists with the management of the Community’s wetlands and water quality data.
- Compliance & Wildlife Management: Helps monitor the Community’s wildlife population and manage collected data.
2. Training: Learns the processes, procedures and techniques required for the monitoring and preservation of the Community’s environmental resources.
- Performs hands-on training with the Environmental Specialists, Senior Environmental Specialists, Environmental Engineers and Senior Environmental Engineers in multiple facets of environmental quality.
- Attends environmental quality and wildlife training courses as assigned.
- “Shadows” senior staff in the performance of their duties.
- Learns to install and operate equipment and instruments used to collect data.
3. Environmental Education and Outreach: Provides environmental education and outreach to the Community.
- Relays vital information to the Environmental Programs Supervisor and environmental programs staff.
- Delivers information to the public about various environmental topics, and works to solicit participation for grant success.
- Assists with outreach presentations at public meetings regarding programmatic and technical issues, and relays information important to the protection of human health, natural resources and the environment.
- Assists with the planning of and participates in outreach events like Earth Day and Fall Overhaul.
4. Miscellaneous: Performs other job related tasks as assigned by the Environmental Programs Supervisor, CDD Assistant Director, or CDD Director.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, ordinances, customs and traditions of the SRPMIC.
- Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other Community employees and residents.
- Skill with both verbal and written communication.
- Skill in the use of photographic equipment and in gathering data.
- Skill using a computer and job related software such as Microsoft Applications.
- Ability to learn technical skills.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education & Experience: Graduation from High School or a GED equivalent is required.
- Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.
Special Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
- Requires the ability to collect environmental quality samples under a variety of working conditions.
- May be required to stand or walk for extended periods, and be exposed to severe weather conditions including heat and cold as well as lift and carry special (heavy) equipment or other objects.
Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
