The Arizona Field Ornithogists (AZFO) and the Western Bird Banding Association (WBBA) are holding a joint annual meeting from September 26th – 29th in Tuscon, AZ. The AZFO is an organization of birders and ornithologists dedicated to increasing the knowledge of the changing status, identification, and distribution of Arizona’s birdlife. They have partnered with the WBBA, a non-profit organization of ornithologists & naturalists focused on ecological research through the study of banded birds, for a joint annual meeting focused on sharing their knowledge, experience, and passion for bird conservation in Arizona and beyond its borders.

This year there are several added workshops covering subjects such as an MOTUS tag certification, ARU technology, application WRP plumage/aging system, Desert Thrasher solar clearance survey protocol review, and an introduction to Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy Owl research and monitoring. Be sure to secure your spot in one of the many Friday Workshops after registering before time runs out!
Friday evening will be wrapped up with a social at Borderlands Brewing Company, where you can sample the IPA specially created in collaboration with Borderlands Brewing Company to commemorate this year’s meeting!
Saturday’s focus is the slate of scientific presentations and organization business. The evening will include a dinner and the keynote will follow shortly after in the college’s amphitheater. AZFO and WBBA are happy to announce our Joint Annual Meeting keynote speaker will be Richard Fischer, PhD CWB. Research Wildlife Biologist and Lead for the USACE Threatened and Endangered Species Team, and National Coordinator for the DoD Partners in Flight
- Richard Fischer’s keynote will provide valuable insight into the proactive efforts of Department of Defense (DoD) installations to preserve bird species and populations. He will highlight the unique approaches that various military bases adopt and their exceptional habitat and species management initiatives. Additionally, he will focus on specific projects in Arizona, as well as cooperative regional endeavors dedicated to the conservation of avian life.
