Bear Canyon Fountain Grass Weekend

September 8 @ 1:00 PM – September 10 @ 6:00 PM
Carianne, Field Coordinator: carianne@skyislandalliance.org

Join us as we backpack into Bear Canyon on our quest to REMOVE INVASIVE FOUNTAIN GRASS.

BACKGROUND

Our work to remove fountain grass and other invasive plants from Bear Canyon first began of Pima County property back in 2014! over the years we have been working our way up the canyon removing invasives and planting native plants in our wake. Now we are kicking this project up a notch and starting work in some of the higher reaches of the canyon. Join us as we backpack into Sycamore Reservoir along the Arizona Trail, and help us start a new round in our battle against invasive grasses in the Catalinas.

TRIP LOGISTICS

Friday 1:00 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the Gordan Hirabayashi Campsite in the Santa Catalina Mountains.

Friday 2:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the campsite, you may arrive at 2:00 PM on Friday. We will hike about 2.5 miles into Sycamore Reservoir and set up camp for the weekend.

Saturday 8:00 AM: Be prepared to go over the day’s work and head out to work the canyon. We will work throughout the day.

Sunday 8:00 AM: Get started on the day’s work. We will finish up by early afternoon, hike out, and then head back to Tucson.

THE WORK

This project is rated as strenuous; we will be backpacking into Bear Canyon carrying tools along with our camping gear and food, and we will be working in potentially steep and uneven terrain, as we manually remove fountain grass.

WHAT TO BRING

CLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT!

Aside from that, anything you would bring on a 2 night backpacking trip would be recommended, such as tent, sleeping bag and pad, food and stove, water bottle and a method of water treatment, toiletries, clothes, sun protection (sunscreen, long pants and long-sleeved shirts), etc.

PROVIDED BY SIA

Tools, work gloves, and first aid equipment.  Tools involved – picks, and metal pry bars will be our main tools for digging. Each participant will need to carry in a tool.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Families welcome!

Sorry, dogs are not allowed on this project.

There is no fee involved for this project (although we will put any donations to good use!)
