National Public Lands Day Activities

National Public Lands Day is Saturday, September 30th.
Join one of these events and service activities happening throughout Arizona:
Seek the San Pedro, 9am – 3pm
Free community event and creative writing/nature writing workshop at the San Pedro House near Sierra Vista, AZ. Activities include nature walks, exhibits, wildlife demonstrations, and the chance to learn more about water, birds, history and so much more! Nature walks will occur hourly in the morning, and Ken Lamberton will also lead a writing workshop in the morning (registration is required for the writing workshop). Against the lush backdrop of the San Pedro River, there will also be reading and book-signings by well-known Arizona authors including Ken Lamberton, Richard Shelton, and Jan Cleere.

Tumacácori National Historical Park Trail and River Clean Up, 8:30am – 12pm
Volunteers of all ages are invited to join Tumacácori National Historical Park (NHP) to celebrate the 24th Annual National Public Lands Day. Together we will celebrate our shared public lands, cleaning up trash and litter along the 1.5 mile section of the Juan Bautista de Anza Trail, within the park (3 mi round trip). The event takes place on September 30, 2017 from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers will meet in the park picnic area and are asked to bring a reusable water bottle, a hat, and work gloves. Supplies provided by the park include; trash bags, and a limited supply of work gloves. After the trail cleanup, the group will celebrate in the park picnic area with raspados (snow cones).

Wheatfields Lake Clean-up, 9am – 12pm
Wheatfields Lake is one of several recreational lakes on the Navajo Nation, and it holds the headwaters of the Chinle Wash, which flows through Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Join Park Rangers and Staff of Canyon de Chelly National Monument in cleaning up around Tsaile Lake. Park Rangers will provide trash bags, some gloves, and some trash pickers. Bring your own gloves, water, snacks, and wear comfortable clothing.

Help improve open habitat for pronghorn and mule deer by altering 3 miles of fence in the Bonita Plains pronghorn travel corridor. We will be working on private lands approximately 31 miles north of Wilcox and 1-mile west of Bonita, AZ off the High Creek Road. Bring work gloves (The AAF will have a limited supply), snacks, water, personal gear, orange safety vest (if you have one, otherwise one will be provided).CONTACT: Glen Dickens, 520-247-4907.
