POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the supervision of the Mexican Wolf Project Field Supervisor, this position will be responsible for working on the daily execution of field activities and associated collection of biological data and management of Mexican wolves on non-Tribal lands of Arizona. This position will support the Department’s Field Team Leader (FTL) in conducting, and coordinating professional wildlife research and provides necessary office/administrative support including writing a variety of complex correspondence, reports, and project summaries. This position will use technical knowledge and expertise to enter data into a geospatial database, manage the database and check for accuracy and completeness. Utilizes GIS software to display and analyze spatial data for management purposes and provide input on project priorities, work strategies and reports. Assists project administrators and the FTL with development and implementation of public outreach materials and activities, such as newsletters, meetings, presentations, and direct interactions with individuals. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of complex endangered species issues which include the non-essential experimental population rule, and the Final Environment Impact Statement, knowledge of wolf behavior and management techniques, computer databases and GIS software applications, knowledge of the background of the project to be able to give accurate information in presentations and reports. The candidate must have skills in trapping, handling, monitoring, and managing large carnivores (wolf management experience preferred), and proven abilities in field team working relationships under stressful situations and harsh environmental conditions. The candidate will have skills in aerial telemetry methods, back-country off-road and four wheel drive travel, navigation using a GPS and ability to utilize ARC GIS software for map preparation and data analysis and must have strong interpersonal communication capabilities. The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in a wildlife science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
Preference will be given to those candidates who have experience working effectively in a social environment where stakeholders are actively opposed to the work, preferably in efforts involving endangered species restoration efforts.
