SALARY: $31,110 – $55,762 / Per Year

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The GIS Specialist I position is an entry-level position that is responsible for providing GIS support and services to Department employees. Provides support for development of data and web applications through various means such as ArcGIS Web App Builder, App Studio, or JAVA Script APIs. Provides support with data development techniques such as digitization, data mining, GPS data collection, ArcGIS Server Services, and other methods that may include quality assurance and control routines.  Performs GIS analysis and modeling through coordination with project leads and GIS staff to include map creation, data analysis technical assistance and plotting needs, and ensuring products meet project requirements.  This position will support the maintenance of applications such as the Recreational Access Arizona Web mapping tool and mobile application version, including updates of GIS data and services to maintain accuracy for public users. Also works with the GIS lead for the Landowner Relations Program (LRP) accomplishments Database (LORAX), including collaboration on training staff on using the database, Smart phone field collection, and other technology needs. Coordinates with the Department’s Game Program to plan and develop applications that support and comply with the Department’s Information Systems Branch guidelines and standards.  Reviews popular and technical publications to maintain proficiency in specialty field(s).  Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate must have knowledge of/in: GIS theory, technology and real world applications of GIS technology, preferably including web app development and maintenance, and a background of experience or education in fish and wildlife management and advanced biology.

The candidate must be skilled in the use of GPS devices and mobile technology, computers, cameras and other necessary tools and equipment, data entry and analysis, and in development and maintenance of online GIS applications, centralized databases, and use of the latest GIS software.

The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in a wildlife science, environmental sciences, conservation biology/studies, or one of most life or physical science degrees, geographical sciences, or closely related field from an accredited college or university and one year of professional experience in a wildlife/conservation research or wildlife/conservation management department or agency.

A graduate degree in a wildlife science or a closely related field may substitute for one year or required experience. Preference will be given to GIS Professional certified individual, or an individual with advanced education in fields relating to Geographic Information Systems (e.g. MS-GIS; certificate courses alone will not necessarily satisfy this preference).

Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).
