POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Arizona Game and Fish Department is seeking assistance in their GIS Program.
One GIS internship will support wildlife and fisheries management through the use of GIS. Intern will work on a variety of GIS and data management related projects under general supervisor guidance. Assignments vary from simple and repetitive data entry and GIS data creation, to more advanced tasks including interpreting legal language in regulations and web application development using ArcGIS Online. Duties provide exposure to a broad range of wildlife related conservation and management projects, and an opportunity for the selected applicant to build real-world GIS skills in a professional setting.
Two GIS Internships will support riparian mapping efforts in Arizona. Interns will work on a variety of GIS, remote sensing and data management related projects for mapping riparian under general supervisor guidance. Assignments vary from the simple and repetitive (data preparation, digitizing, and metadata) to more advanced tasks (photo interpretation, statistical analysis, executing models, database creation/management, and strategic brain-storming). In addition, the intern has the opportunity to conduct field work to collect ground-truthing data via mobile data collection applications. Duties provide exposure to a broad range of wildlife and riparian ecology related conversation and management assignments, and an opportunity for the selected applicant to build real world GIS skills in a professional setting.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in curriculum leading towards a Bachelor’s or higher level degree on a substantially full time basis (usually 12 semester hours) and pursuing a major in Wildlife Biology and/or Geographic Information Systems applicable to the internship opportunity (subject to verification-attach verification)
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above
- Valid driver’s license (free of restrictions, if applicable)
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of geodatabases, table schemas, spatial projections and ESRI software. The candidate must be able to create and edit data in ArcGIS and work both independently and on a team. The preferred candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills including strong verbal and written communication and strong attention to detail. The preferred candidate will have at least one college-level geographic information systems course.
