POSITION OVERVIEW:
STATE HOUSING AND UTILITIES ARE PROVIDED TO EMPLOYEES AT THE HATCHERY.
Feeds and cares for live fish; treats with therapeutic chemicals; cleans units; adjusts water flows; removes dead fish; checks water quality levels. Captures, loads, transports and stocks live fish. Transports, inspects, prepares and cares for live fish eggs; removes dead eggs; treats with therapeutic chemicals; maintains water flows and keeps records. Gathers fish culture data, size of fish, fish condition and water quality data, and other hatchery needs. Communicates with the public, community groups, supervisors, and vendors about Department matters and programs. Maintains hatchery buildings/homes, grounds and support systems; performs minor maintenance. Operates vehicles for hatchery operations to pick up supplies, to train and assist other hatcheries. Maintains hatchery security; checks for visitors after hours; ensures that visitors comply with rules; reports to supervisors, sheriffs, game wardens and emergency units if necessary. Participates in training sessions and meetings requiring travel and overnight stays. Mentors seasonal employees in daily activities. Diagnoses fish diseases and administer chemical treatments. Assists with the design and fabrication of tools/equipment and additions or modifications to hatchery equipment. Builds screens, crowders, and segregation boxes and does maintenance on hatchery buildings and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate will have fish culture experience including the transportation of fish. The candidate will have the ability to work independently and communicate with the public. The candidate must be able to live and work in a remote and isolated environment. The candidate must have three years’ experience equivalent to a Fish Hatchery Worker;OR, an associate of arts degree in aquaculture from an accredited college or university. The preferred candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in a wildlife science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid, state issued commercial driver’s license appropriate to the assignment with air brakes and tanker endorsement (must be obtained within 6 months of appointment). Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).
