POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Aquatic Wildlife Specialist will be responsible for a variety of professional wildlife work related to the management of fisheries resources in the regional area. Duties include designing, planning, coordinating and implementing fish surveys and fishery management projects in regional lakes. Position utilizes standard protocols, techniques and procedures to conduct surveys and enhancement projects in a scientific and safe manner. Develops recommendations and technical reports from fisheries surveys, habitat and management evaluations and environmental inventories and maintains regional fisheries databases. Oversees, trains, and leads temporary, seasonal and volunteer field crews. Operate and maintains field and survey equipment.
Provides support on fisheries related activities as assigned by supervisor. Position serves as the Reservoir Biologist for the region and field crew leader on reservoir surveys, projects and enhancements. Additionally, the position will implement annual gillnetting and electrofishing surveys on regional lakes during the spring and fall, and conduct winterkill related monitoring and maintenance during the winter. Projects to improve fish habitat and water quality will also be planned and implemented. Work schedule may include working weekends, travelling, and working in inclement weather. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate must have knowledge of fisheries surveys techniques, sportfish and native fish identification and habitat requirements, water chemistry measuring devices, Department policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, operation and maintenance of transportation vehicles and fisheries survey equipment, basic statistics and computers, maps and GPS equipment, GIS software and analysis and interpretation of field data. The candidate will be skilled in the application of fisheries management and limnological techniques, camping and outdoor survival, equipment maintenance and repair, operating a wide range of transportation vehicles and small watercraft, various net gear and electrofishing boat to survey reservoir fish populations, gathering and standardized sampling techniques, computer data processing, oral and written communication and public relations techniques.
The candidate must have a Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries or wildlife with emphasis on aquatic ecosystems, fisheries techniques, limnology, hydrology, population dynamics and ecosystem ecology or closely related field. The preferred candidate will have two years of job experience in resource and/or wildlife management and have certification in pesticide application.
