DESCRIPTION:BLM – Tucson Office – Manville Road Fence Volunteers\nIronwood Forest National Monument\n3201 E. Universal Way; Tucson\, AZ 85756\nApril 29th @ 8AM \n  \nDescription \nCreated by presidential proclamation in 2000 by Bill Clinton and taking its name from one of the longest living trees in the Arizona desert. The 129\,000-acre Ironwood Forest National Monument (IFNM) is a true Sonoran Desert showcase. However\, there are some areas on the IFNM where people have driven off road and created areas where vegetation is disturbed and the ground is torn up.  To prevent any further damage and to mitigate these issues\, the BLM initiated a fencing project to keep people on designated routes to protect wildlife habitat\, sensitive soils\, and areas of archaeological significance. \nPosition Summary \nA volunteer work day event will be taking place on the Ironwood Forest National Monument to help construct fence along Manville Road. This will be an all-day event. \nRequirements of/for volunteers \nMust be Physically Fit. \n\nMust able to lift 50 lbs. and walk for long distances in the heat.\nMust be 16 years or older.\nMust have personal vehicle or ability to carpool to worksite.\nMust be able to work safely in a group setting.\nMust be prepared to work under varied conditions\, including inclement weather and in remote locations.\nMust fill out and sign volunteer agreement form\n\nDuties and Responsibilities \nAssist with an ongoing fencing project which includes the following tasks: \n\nLifting barbed wire spool via rod and one other person to unroll wire safely\nWrapping wire and tying it tight using hands and fencing pliers\nUsing fence stretchers to pull wire taut\nUsing a t-post pounder to drive in t-posts\n\nTraining \nVolunteers will be briefed on Bureau of Land Management policies\, and training will occur on-site. Job Hazard Analysis for specialized equipment will occur prior to event. Most of the training will occur on-the-job\, as volunteers will be guided by Bureau of Land Management staff and interns. \nTime Commitment \nApril 29 at 8am \nSpecial Notice  \nThe monument is a travel corridor for illegal immigrants traveling from Mexico. All suspected illegal activities should be reported to BLM or local law enforcement authorities. Visitors should stay safe by avoiding contact with persons exhibiting suspicious behavior or engaged in dangerous activities. Drive with caution and look for fast-moving vehicles and pedestrians on back roads. Some roads are rugged: high clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended in those areas. \nHazards include poisonous snakes\, Africanized bees\, and potential encounters with illegal users of public land. Hunting is permitted through the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The national monument contains state trust lands and private lands. Recreation on state trust lands requires a permit from the State of Arizona. SUMMARY:Arizona Antelope Foundation: Fence Modification Project
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHighway 83 / Babocomari Ranch \nFence Modification\nApril 14-16\, 2017\n\n  \nProject Location:  We will be working on ADOT Right-of-Way (ROW) fences on Highway 83 from Elgin School south. \nProject Begins: Friday April 14th at 10AM\, Saturday April 15th 8-5 and Sunday 8-12. Meet at camp for all start times. The campsite will be available on Thursday night. This is a 3-day project\, but we need the most volunteers on Saturday. If you can only work one day Saturday would be the best for our work crew allocations. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying approximately 2 miles of existing fence in 6 different segments on the ROW of HW83-South. We will be removing the 2 bottoms strands of barbed wire and replacing with a single strand of smooth wire at a height of 16 inches. All fence stays will be removed and replaced with new. We will also modify 3.5 miles of adjacent pasture fence removing 2 strands and replacing with a smooth wire at a height of 18 inches. \nPronghorn Benefits: This highway ROW travel corridor project will improve motorist safety and help ensure that pronghorn that are now regularly crossing HW83-South do not get hung up within the ROW.  This project is a “Capstone” effort and will complete free pronghorn access in the southern portion of the Santa Cruz Plains pronghorn corridor improvement project. \nNFWF Grant Benefits: All volunteer work hours and mileage will be use as in-kind match for our 6-year our Southeastern Arizona Pronghorn Enhancement project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Arizona Game and Fish Habitat Partnership program. \nWhat to Bring: Workgloves (The AAF will have a limited supply)\, snacks\, water\, personal gear. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunches to eat in the field on the 3 work days.  The AAF will be providing dinners on both Friday and Saturday nights and continental breakfasts with coffee and juice on Saturday and Sunday mornings.\n \nContact: Glen Dickens at (520-247-4907) for project information. \nIf you are planning to attend\, please RSVP to info@azantelope.org by Friday April 7th so we can plan to have enough food and tools. \nDirections to Camp:  \nAAF project/camp site will be about 10 miles southeast of the intersection of Highways 83/82 at Sonoita. \nTravel 20 miles south of Tucson on I-10; turn south on Highway 83 and travel 25 miles to the town of Sonoita intersection. \nFrom this point turn east on Highway 82 and travel approximately 5 miles to the Upper Elgin paved road. \nTurn south again and follow AAF signs from that  point. Camp will be located 4 miles south located on the east side of the roadway at the historic Rose Tree corrals and stone bunkhouse immediately adjacent to the roadway.

Our events have been recognized as a “Premier Signature Event” of the Arizona SciTech Festival. These events are part of the Camp Verde’s Spring Heritage Festival. DESCRIPTION:Spring Assessments: Aravaipa Uplands in March\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\n\n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThis weekend\, we will be assessing springs in the upland watershed of Aravaipa Canyon. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking). We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own high clearance\, 4WD\, vehicle. Please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTRIP SCHEDULE \nFriday 1:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Drive out to camp in the uplands on the east or west side of Aravaipa Canyon. Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. Then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until about 2:00 pm\, then pack up and head home for a shower! We will try and be back to Tucson by 5 or 6 pm. \nTHE WORK \nAt the springs\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. \nSpring assessments require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. Springs in this area have limited road access\, so we will be driving on a high clearance\, 4WD road\, and then hiking off trail to the springs\, up to about 2 miles each way. Each team will probably be able to assess 2-3 springs per day. We may hike as much as 8 miles in one day with part or all of that being off-trail. \nFor spring assessments\, prior training is not required\, but experienced volunteers and volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate or vertebrate identification skills are desired. \nCAMP LOCATION \nWe will caravan out to the east or west side of Aravaipa\, and then explore a bit together to find a good camp site for the weekend. It will be an undeveloped site\, so plan to bring your own water for drinking and washing (it’s a good idea to bring more than you think you will need)\, as well as trowels and toilet paper for bathroom breaks. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, mattresses\, stoves\, etc. that you might bring on any normal car camping trip.\nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear.\nSeveral gallons of water per person plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 6 meals out\, plus snacks.\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them!\nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike.\nIf you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it.\nVolunteer Agreement/Waiver – All volunteers need to sign the agreement annually. DESCRIPTION:Microhabitat and Movement Assessment for Northern Mexican Gartersnakes (Thamnophis eques megalops) at Bubbling Ponds Hatchery\, Arizona\nPresenter: Tiffany Sprague\nCommittee members: Heather Bateman\, Stan Cunningham\, Thomas Jones\, Erika Nowak \n \n\nSpecies conservation and effective research study design require an understanding of the habitats on which that species depends as well as how it moves within and among those habitats. Bubbling Ponds Hatchery in Cornville\, Arizona\, supports a robust population of the northern Mexican gartersnake (Thamnophis eques megalops)\, which was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 2014. Natural resource managers are interested in understanding the ecology of gartersnakes at this site to guide hatchery operations and to serve as a model for habitat creation and restoration. This study identified habitat selection and activity patterns of northern Mexican gartersnakes at the hatchery and how frequency of monitoring affects research results. Gartersnakes exhibited seasonal variation in habitat selection and activity\, selecting wetland edges and moving longer distances during the active season and being less mobile and selecting upland habitats during the inactive season. Frequency of monitoring influenced robustness of results\, with less-frequent monitoring providing only 53–62% of known daily distances traveled during the active season. Conservation of this species should incorporate a landscape-level approach that includes abundant wetland edge habitat with connected upland areas. SUMMARY:Special 50th JAM Data Point Photo Contest
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of 50 years of fish and wildlife management coordination among biologists in Arizona and New Mexico\, we are upgrading the JAM photo contest to highlight the past and the future of our field. \nOne of the ways we’re doing that is by inviting all entries to also be submitted to this Data Point contest that we hope will showcase one of the many new tools that is now at our disposal: iNaturalist.org. \nWe created the 50th Joint Annual Meeting Data Point Photo Contest project on iNaturalist.org to host this Data Point contest. For an image to be eligible\, a print must be submitted to one of the main contest categories: Wild Mammals\, Wild Birds\, Reptiles and Amphibians\, Wild Fish and Invertebrates\, Landscape\, Caught in the Act\, Historic Caught in the Act\, Remote Cams\, or NextGen; and a digital version must be submitted as an observation to iNaturalist and shared with this project (which limits entries to observations from AZ & NM). \nWhen submitting a record for the contest\, users will be prompted to select a Data Points category for consideration: Rare Birds & Stranger Things\, Keeping Common Species Common\, or Invasive Procedures & Feral Terrors. For a description of the considerations for these categories please refer to the “About” section of the project web/mobile application. \nWinners will be selected by a panel (not all conference attendees) that will evaluate records on both the quality of the image and the value of the data point. There will NOT be any cash prizes for this Data Points contest\, but winning records will be shared at the JAM banquet and featured on the websites and social media outlets of iNaturalist.org and the partner chapters of TWS and AFS. DESCRIPTION:Developing a Successful Project Permit Proposal\nJoint Annual Meeting 2017 of the AZ and NM Chapters of the American Fisheries Society and The Wildlife Society\nPresented by:\nSamantha Ferguson\, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish AND Chrissy Kondrat-Smith\, Arizona Game & Fish Department \n\nCreating a substantive project proposal in the state scientific collecting permit application process is the responsibility of everyone who would like to obtain scientific permit and maintain positive relationship with the permitting agency (federal or state). We’ll return to the meeting spot by 3pm. We will shuttle/carpool to the actual work site in Bear Canyon from our meeting spot\, as we will be driving into an area of the National Forest with restricted access and limited parking. \nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be digging out invasive grasses. The work will include bending and walking on uneven surfaces\, and potentially walking through water.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. The parking lot is just before N. Turquoise  Moon Way. \nBe sure to bring gloves\, wear heavy boots\, long pants\, long-sleeved shirt\, hat\, and sunscreen. Also bring a water bottle and snacks. We will provide digging bars and shovels and plastic garbage bags. There will be a water container if you need to refill your bottle.

SUMMARY:McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Field Institute - Student Volunteer Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Field Institute\n  \n1.) Restoring Native Vegetation on closed trails – an experimental approach:  \nDescription: \nTrails that are closed often leave visible scars on the landscape\, which can be mitigated using a variety of restoration techniques. However\, very little is known about the effectiveness of the various techniques\, especially in the Sonoran Desert. The purpose of this study is to test various restoration techniques on trails that are being closed\, in order to develop best practives and methods for restoring closed trails to natural condition in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. This project requires hiking roughly 6-8 miles per day over moderately hilly terrain. Raptor/Prairie Falcon Training \nDescription: \nTom’s Thumb\, a favorite hiking and climbing destination spot in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve\, provides critical nesting habitat for several falcon species. Each year the Field Institute monitors nest occupancy and success\, along with user compliance with temporary area closures. Great for building wildlife observation skills! This project requires a steep\, 2.5 mile hike to the observation point. Please contact Melanie at Melanie@mcdowellsonoran.org to sign up for training. Training: Falcon behavior and natural history – January 12\, 6-8PM @ Scottsdale Community College\, Science Lecture Building Room 116; Monitoring falcon nest success – January 19\, 3-5PM @ McDowell Sonoran Preserve Gateway Trailhead. Fieldwork: Flexible\, will be conducted 1-2 times per week during peak times between February – June 2017. Volunteers will need to sign up for field dates on a monthly basis via doodle poll. TRAINING REQUIRED. \n  \n3.) Fountain grass and buffelgrass removal experiment: \nDescription: \nFountain grass and buffelgrass are two recently introduced and highly prolific plants that are shown to have a negative effect on native plant biodiversity as well as Sonoran Desert tortoise habitat. In the spring of 2017\, we will initiate several large-scale\, experimental removals of the two grass species in an attempt to determine the most efficient and effective removal techniques\, while having the least impact on native vegetation.
