DESCRIPTION:Small Mammal Trapping with AZGFD (Buckeye)\n  \nThe Arizona Game and Fish Dept. needs volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Buckeye. This is a great opportunity for interested volunteers to get involved with AZGFD projects. The first trapping event is October 11th-18th and the second is November 14th-21st. Volunteers are needed to help check traps in the morning in addition to processing rodents via data recording (no handling will be allowed). \nSix-hundred traps need to be set across the study area. Last week\, over 1000 animals were captured\, representing 7 different species. Traps are opened an hour before sunrise and 2 hours after\, so they are early mornings but the work is fun! \nSome transportation to AZGFD Headquarters can be provided\, but if you are using a personal vehicle\, 4×4 capability is required. \n  \nCONTACT: Jonathan Miller @ JDMiller@azgfd.gov

SUMMARY:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Fall Spotlighting (October)
DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. You must be able to stay awake from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am! \nWhen signing up\, please sign up your group\, listing first & last names as well as if you are needing a vehicle to ride in or able to bring your own for the spotlighting. DESCRIPTION:Learn more and sign up here.\nItinerary\nDay 1 – Sonora Desert Museum and Bisbee\nYour group will meet early in the morning in Tucson\, Arizona and then head over to the nearby Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum to observe and learn about the animals that are native to the sky island region. Your expert wildlife guides will escort you through the museum and discuss the behavior and ecology of many of the mammals we will be tracking including bobcats\, javelinas\, coyotes\, grey foxes\, mule deer\, and many others. \nAfter leaving the desert museum we will head to Bisbee\, a ghost town from the nineteenth-century mining era that has now been revived. Here you will visit a local wildlife corridor to look for tracks and examine photos from camera traps for possible images of mountain lions and other stealthy animals that frequently pass through the area. \nAfterwards\, you will get to discuss the art of nature writing and journaling with Ken Lamberton\, the John Burrough’s award winning nature writer. Late in the day you will have time to wander through the streets and terraced mountain sides of Bisbee to take in the once bustling saloons now filled with art galleries\, and then grab dinner at a local restaurant before settling down for the evening in your cozy room.\n​\nAccommodations: Bisbee Lodge\nMeals Included: Lunch\n \n  \nDays 2-4 – Cuenca Los Ojos\nDeparting Bisbee early in the morning\, the group will head toward the Mexican border\, crossing over at Douglas\, Arizona and then continuing onto the Cuenca Los Ojos\, a preserve adjacent to the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. You will be welcomed by the friendly support staff who will help get you settled in\, and then your guides will go over the itinerary and what to expect during the next three days as well as give you an overview of the grassland\, mountain\, and riparian ecosystems that comprise the preserve lands. \nEach day at Cuenca Los Ojos the group will venture out on a different part of the landscape to look for animal sign. You will spend time in the grasslands\, in rugged canyons\, and along creek corridors looking for fresh tracks as well as along roadways and forested areas looking for other evidence of animal activity. Your expert guides will point out a variety of tracks and show you how to accurately identify them using morphology clues\, as well as how to ascertain animal gaits and associated behaviors. During early morning hours and around dusk\, you will also go out to look for sightings of the animals you are tracking. \nIn addition to looking for tracks and sign\, you will get to partake in bird language activities each day. Usually\, this will entail having the group spread out over a given area to perform an exercise called a bird “sit\,” with each individual recording their observations during a specified time interval. After the “sit” period is completed\, the group will reconvene and under the leadership of your avian guide\, you will perform a mapping debrief. This is a fascinating undertaking that pieces together each person’s observations and produces a comprehensive 4-dimensional story of what transpired during the observation period. \nYour guides will also instruct you on perfecting observational techniques\, including how to locate animals in the wild and strategies for finding areas of foraging\, bedding\, and socializing. They will also demonstrate where and how to setup camera traps\, how to set out track plates and make plaster casts of tracks\, and other methods for collecting data. You will also get to see the amazing techniques that have been utilized to restore this landscape to its former glory\, regenerating habitat that has once again made it a haven for wildlife. \nAccommodations: Preserve Lodge\nMeals Included: Breakfast\, Lunch\, Dinner\n \n \nDay 5 – San Pedro River\, Tombstone\, & Return to Tucson\nEarly morning you will depart Cuenca Los Ojos and drive back across the border\, crossing again at Douglas\, Arizona and then heading to a preserve along the San Pedro River\, one of the last free-flowing rivers in the American Southwest and a vital source of water for desert wildlife. The group will have a final opportunity to search for tracks and sign along the river banks\, before heading back to Tucson\, making one last stop at the historic old west town of Tombstone during the lunch hour. \nHere you can choose to visit the OK Corral\, scene of the famous gunfight between the town’s lawmen and local cattlemen\, or if you prefer\, take a tour of the fascinating Bird Cage Theater\, which was open 24 hours a day\, 365 days a year for eight years without ever closing. DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHabitat Project: Bonita\nSeptember 30th\, 2017\nProject Location: We will be working on private lands approximately 31 miles North of Wilcox and 1 mile West of Bonita\, AZ off the High Creek Road. \nProject Begins: Saturday\, September 30th. Please meet at camp at 8:00AM. This is a one day project. If you arrive after 8:00AM\, someone in camp will direct you to the project worksite. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying 3 miles of existing boundary fence between the KJ and Bonita Ranches. This will entail removal of the bottom strand of barbed wire and replacing it with smooth wire 16″ above the ground. The fence consists of wooden and metal t-posts\, along with various stay materials. We will fix unrepairable stays with new and add metal t-posts at required locations. We will be able to utilize ATV’s along the fence line. Volunteer drop off and vehicle parking is available at the start points Location is North of the High Creek Road\, approx 1 mile West of the Bonita Store. \nPronghorn Benefits: This effort is located in direct proximity to ongoing mesquite removal for the Bonita Grasslands NRCS/G&F restoration project with a goal of improving up to 10\,000 acres in the next 4 years. Over the past 7 years\, the areas adjacent to and within this project have been grubbed\, new waters and boundary fence installed. These projects will help ensure that resident pronghorn and mule deer can safely utilize open grassland corridors without interference due to fence line obstructions. It will assist in accomplishing a key portion of the overall Bonita Plains pronghorn travel corridor improvement project. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunch to eat in the field on Saturday. DESCRIPTION:Pollinator Planting at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument\nSeptember 21 @ 10:00 AM – September 24 @ 8:00 PM\nBryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator: bryon@skyislandalliance.org \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \n\nOther important points: \nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. HOWEVER\, DO KEEP IT ON YOUR RADAR\, ‘CAUSE THESE GILA CLIFF TRIPS ARE AWESOME! \nRegistration will open soon… \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \nOther important points: \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. DESCRIPTION:Count Cormorants with the Arizona Game & Fish Dept.\nThe AZGFD needs your help in conducting research statewide to characterize cormorant populations and their distributions and impacts on fish. \n  \nThree options for helping out:  \n\nAssist with a one-day cormorant count at assigned water bodies or within a specific area that may contain multiple waters. You can sign up to help on any or all of the count dates (see below). This statewide count will take place during 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, and will occur on the specified dates over the next year:\n\nFall count: September 16\, 2017\nWinter count: January 20\, 2018\nSpring count: March 17\, 2018\n\n\nVisit a specified area at least once a month or 3 times during each quarter to document and record the presence and location of tagged cormorants. Time of day is flexible. This effort will start after June 2017 and we will notify volunteers to start looking for tagged birds once we begin captures. Volunteers assisting with this effort and the above opportunity may be asked to survey their assigned count areas.\nAssist with direct observations of cormorants feeding to determine size (and species as feasible) of fish being eaten at each site. This effort will focus primarily on community fishing waters in urban areas and time of day for observations is flexible. We’re asking volunteers to visit designated sites during each quarter of the year. Now we are kicking this project up a notch and starting work in some of the higher reaches of the canyon. Join us as we backpack into Sycamore Reservoir along the Arizona Trail\, and help us start a new round in our battle against invasive grasses in the Catalinas. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\nTRIP LOGISTICS \nFriday 1:00 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the Gordan Hirabayashi Campsite in the Santa Catalina Mountains. \nFriday 2:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the campsite\, you may arrive at 2:00 PM on Friday. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. DESCRIPTION:Wilderness Waters – Labor Day in the Galiuros\nSeptember 1 @ 1:30 PM – September 4 @ 6:00 PM\nCarianne\, Field Coordinator: carianne@skyislandalliance.org \nBACKGROUND \nSIA has taken on a project to help the Coronado National Forest inventory and assess water resources in the Galiuro\, Miller Peak\, Rincon\, Chiricahua\, Mt. Wrightson\, Pajarita\, and Santa Teresa wilderness areas. This weekend\, we will be working to assess springs and other water resources in the Galiuro Wilderness area. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking) in very rugged and steep terrain. Some assessments will require hiking all day (perhaps 12 miles or more) both on and off trail. You should be a strong and experienced hiker to accompany us on this trip. We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own high clearance\, 4WD\, vehicle. The roads into our potential campsites are rugged\, please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\nTRIP SCHEDULE \nFriday 1:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Drive out to camp in the southern Galiuros. Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. Then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work throughout the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nMonday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until lunch time\, then pack up camp and head back to Tucson. We should arrive back at the office by 6pm Monday evening. \n\nTHE WORK \nAt our work sites\, we will be recording data such as water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, documenting the flora and fauna\, and assessing the condition of the site. These assessments will require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. The sites are usually up somewhat steep drainages\, so we may be clambering over and around boulders at times. Each team will hopefully be able to assess 2-3 sites per day. We may hike as much as 12 miles in one day with part or all of that being off-trail. For these assessments\, no special skills are necessary\, but we are looking for strong hikers\, and tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate identification skills can be helpful. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. \nCAMP LOCATION \nCamp location has yet to be determined\, but it will almost certainly be a wilderness campsite. \n\nWHAT TO BRING \nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, sleeping pad\, stove\, etc. that you might bring on any multi-day backpacking trip. \nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear. \nRe-usable water vessels such as bottles or bladders\, a water filter\, or disinfecting method\, plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 9 meals out\, plus snacks. \nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc. \nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them! \nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike. \nIf you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it. \nTransportation to and from trail heads will be provided by SIA staff members and volunteers with suitable vehicles. \n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \nAssessment tools and equipment\, cameras\, GPS\, data sheets\, maps\, first-aid kits. \nDue to the sensitive nature of springs\, dogs are not allowed. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \nThis trip will be led by Bryon Lichtenhan and Sami Hammer. SUMMARY:Arizona Antelope Foundation: Government Prairie Fence Modification Project
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHabitat Project: Government Prairie Fence Modification\nAugust 12\, 2017\nProject Location:  We will be working 17 miles west of Flagstaff and 11 miles north of Interstate 40 in the Spring Valley/Government Prairie area. \nProject Begins: Saturday August 12th\, please arrive at camp by 8:00 AM.  This is a one day project for all attendees. \nProject Activity: We will be removing fencing around a wildlife water and modifying fencing to pronghorn friendly standards in various locations. \nPronghorn Benefits: This fence project will improve an existing pronghorn movement corridor from their summer range on Government Prairie to winter habitat in the Ida and Babbitt grasslands to the north. Data from currently collared pronghorn is used to identify key areas for modification. \nHPC Grant Benefits:  All volunteer work hours and mileage will be used as in-kind match for an approved and funded 2017 AAF-AGFD North of I-40 Pronghorn Corridor Connectivity Project. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunch to eat in the field on Saturday.  The AAF will provide dinner for all volunteers on Friday and Saturday nights and continental breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  \nWhat to Bring: Work gloves (The AAF will have a limited supply)\, snacks\, water\, personal gear. \nContact: Glen Dickens at (520-247-4907) for project information. \nIf you are planning to attend\, please RSVP to info@azantelope.org by Tuesday August  8th so we can plan to have enough food and tools. \nDirections to Camp:  \nAAF project/camp site will be 17 miles west of Flagstaff and 11 miles north of Interstate 40 near Spring Valley on the Kaibab Forest. \nComing from Phoenix on I-17 northbound when approaching Flagstaff take I-40 west towards Williams/Kingman. Go west on I-40 approximately 17 miles to Exit 178 (Parks Exit). Go north (right) on Parks road .1 mile to Route 66. Go west (left) on Route 66 .5 mile to Spring Valley Road.  Go north (right) on Spring Valley Road 11.2 miles to Forest Road 3269C (Spring Valley Road turns into Forest Road 144\, 1 mile south of Forest Road 3269C).
