DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Small Mammal Trapping\nArizona Game & Fish Department is looking for volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Lake Pleasant and Lake Havasu. We’ll have crews out during most weeks between early September and late November\, so if you have students that are available to come help\, we could likely put them to good use. Setting and checking traps will often require hiking in\, setting traps in the evening\, hiking out and staying the night somewhere nearby\, checking traps in the morning and processing animals. DESCRIPTION:Walnut Check-Up in the Santa Catalinas\n November 22\, 2017\nCarianne Campbell: carianne@skyislandalliance.org \n  \n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThe Santa Catalina grey squirrel (a subspecies of the Arizona grey squirrel) is in decline throughout the Catalinas and Rincons. Fire\, and competition with introduced Abert’s squirrels\, are thought to be some of the reasons for their lower numbers\, but we are hoping to give these beautiful animals a helping hand by improving some of their habitat on the mountain. With the help of the Forest Service and Borderlands Restoration\, we planted native walnut trees at several sites in the mountains to provide more of their favorite year-round food! Now we are going back to determine how many trees survived\, and to remove the cages we placed around the trees. \n\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\n\nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\n9 AM: Meet with SIA staff at the south end of the Safeway parking lot in the Madera Village Shopping Center: NE corner of Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway.\nSaturday 4:00 PM: We will work throughout the day\, and wrap things up around 4 PM.\nSaturday 5:00 PM: We will arrive back at our meeting spot by 5:00 PM or so.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be carrying buckets of water and caging materials through steep\, uneven terrain.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. Due to the possibility of surface water in the project area\, you might want to wear shoes/boots that you dont mind getting wet and or muddy. Aside from that\, anything you would bring on a long day hike would be recommended\, such as plenty of water\, lunch/snacks\, sun protection (sunscreen\, long pants and long-sleeved shirts)\, cloting appropriate for the weather\, etc.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \n\nTools\, work gloves\, supplemental drinking water and first aid equipment.\n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \n\nFamilies welcome!\nSorry\, dogs are not allowed on this project.\nThere is no fee involved for this project (although we will put any donations to good use!)

These ponds will provide habitat for lowland leopard frogs (Lithobates yavapaiensis) and many other native bird\, bat\, dragonfly and butterfly species. Join us for a day\, or the entire trip\, as we build two ponds and enhance the surrounding habitat with native plantings! \n  \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n  \nPROJECT SCHEDULE & LOCATION \nWednesday: Meet at 1:30 p.m. at our office: 406 S 4th Ave\, Tucson\, at the SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St. To carpool or caranan with us to the site. There is plenty of parking in our lot off 14th as well as along the streets. \nIf you would like come out on your own\, please meet us by 9:00 a.m. at the worksite Thursday-Saturday. \nWe will work throughout each day with a break for lunch\, and will try to be back to the office by 6:00 p.m. Sunday. \n  \nTHE WORK AND WHAT TO KNOWWe will be working to support Tom as he excavates and contours the ponds. This will include prepping the site\, digging and raking soil\, removing/salvaging vegetation from the project area\, and helping to install the new pond liner. We will also be installing native plants that will benefit pollinators and wildlife\, as well as help the site return to a natural appearance as soon as possible. Be prepared to get dirty\, maybe even muddy\, but rest assured that there will be tasks for all levels of ability. \nWHAT TO BRING \n  \nIf you are planning to ride out with us\, be prepared to camp through the weekend. If you are joining us on your own for a day or more\, come prepard with enought provisions to last throughout your trip. We will have access to bathrooms and water\, and SIA will provide our camp kitchen set-up. \n\nCamping gear; tent\, sleeping bag\, pad\, etc…\nWater\, snacks\, and meals. If you ride out with us\, you should be prepared with 12 meals.\nBinoculars – this is a fabulous birding spot!\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) that you don’t mind getting dirty or muddy\nSun Protection (ex. wide-brimmed hat\, sunblock\, long sleeved shirt and long pants)\nRain gear (just in case…)\nSIA will provide all tools and work gloves\, though if you have a pair of gloves you like\, feel free to bring them.

DESCRIPTION:Small Mammal Trapping with AZGFD (Buckeye)\n\nThe Arizona Game and Fish Dept. needs volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Buckeye. This is a great opportunity for interested volunteers to get involved with AZGFD projects. The first trapping event is October 11th-18th and the second is November 14th-21st. Volunteers are needed to help check traps in the morning in addition to processing rodents via data recording (no handling will be allowed). \nSix-hundred traps need to be set across the study area. Last week\, over 1000 animals were captured\, representing 7 different species. SUMMARY:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Fall Spotlighting (November)
DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. You must be able to stay awake from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am! \nWhen signing up\, please sign up your group\, listing first & last names as well as if you are needing a vehicle to ride in or able to bring your own for the spotlighting. (No Rides provided to Seligman\, AZ!). 4×4 vehicles are preferred. Mileage is tax deductible. DESCRIPTION:Wildlife Tracking Workshop – Fall 2017 – Aravaipa\nThursday\, October 19\, 2017 – Sunday\, October 22\,2017\nBryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator: 520-624-7080 ext. 27 OR bryon@skyislandalliance.org \n  \nSAVE $100 IF YOU ARE A FULL-TIME STUDENT OR MEXICAN NATIONAL\nReduced Price = $195\n  \nJoin us for a four-day get-away in a spectacular Sky Island setting with Sky Island Alliance staff and regional guest experts.  Participants gain hands-on field instruction and theory in a variety of skills and techniques\, including: \n\nNatural history and conservation of regional animal species\, with emphasis on the jaguar\, Mexican gray wolf\, ocelot\, black bear\, mountain lion\, bobcat\, white-nose coati\, Mexican opossum\, badger\, desert tortoise\, and box turtle;\nWildlife track morphology\, structure and terminology;\nPhoto documentation;\nMotion-activated wildlife camera monitoring techniques;\nTrack casting and tracing techniques;\nAnimal gaits and movement; and\,\nHands-on experience with track identification in the field.  \n\n\nLOCATION:\nThis workshop will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Guesthouse in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). During the workshop\, we will take the opportunity to gather wildlife tracking data for Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. “We’ve actually seen elk on the preserve” — a rarity at the site’s elevation of 3\,300 feet. \n\nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n12 Noon Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 12 pm on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n4 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around 4 pm.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. The guesthouse is equipped with a full kitchen\, but fridge space can become limited so bring a cooler\, just in case. There are also indoor bathrooms/showers available\, but be conscious of everyone’s needs and don’t plan on lengthy showers. \nCampsites are grassy areas located at the guesthouse and are vehicle accessible. High clearance vehicles are recommended.  Aravaipa Creek is only a short walk away from the camping area.  Potable water is available; water from area creeks should be treated prior to consumption. \nSIA will not be providing any meals during this trip; you will need to bring enough food and water for breakfast\, packable lunches\, dinners\, and any snacks you desire. This means that you will want to be prepared with nine meals: from Thursday dinner to Sunday lunch. \nThe majority of the weekend will be spent outdoors and you can expect to spend time sitting\, and walking or strolling along wet creeks and dry riverbeds as we look for tracks and other wildlife sign.  We provide some blocks of free time\, but the schedule calls for long days\, starting around 8am and ending around 7 or 8 at night. \nAll course materials are included.  You will receive Mark Elbroch’s field guide Mammal Tracks and Sign:  A Guide to North American Species\, a tracking ruler\, laminated wildlife track identification field cards\, and a workshop packet.  We provide a one-year membership to Sky Island Alliance for non-member participants\, including a subscription to our Restoring Connections newsletter.\n \nPLEASE NOTE: \nNo dogs or pets are allowed on this trip.  Participants are required to sign our volunteer release form.  Youth ages 13-17 are welcome if joined by an accompanying adult. Workshop registration will close one week before the first date of the workshop\, or when full.  Please register online and during checkout specify payment by credit card or check. \nSky Island Alliance offers Wildlife Tracking Workshops twice a year\, in both spring and fall.  Our workshops alternate between overnight camping and bed and breakfast style accommodations in different outdoor settings around the Sky Island region; cost can vary slightly based on amenities offered\, but every workshop is taught at the same high quality standard. \n***Cancelation policy:  Due to the limited space availability for this particular workshop\, we cannot provide refunds for cancelation.  However\, we can accept substitutions.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \n\n\nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan at bryon@skyislandalliance.org.

DESCRIPTION:Small Mammal Trapping with AZGFD (Buckeye)\n  \nThe Arizona Game and Fish Dept. needs volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Buckeye. This is a great opportunity for interested volunteers to get involved with AZGFD projects. The first trapping event is October 11th-18th and the second is November 14th-21st. Volunteers are needed to help check traps in the morning in addition to processing rodents via data recording (no handling will be allowed). \nSix-hundred traps need to be set across the study area. Last week\, over 1000 animals were captured\, representing 7 different species. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. DESCRIPTION:Learn more and sign up here.\nItinerary\nDay 1 – Sonora Desert Museum and Bisbee\nYour group will meet early in the morning in Tucson\, Arizona and then head over to the nearby Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum to observe and learn about the animals that are native to the sky island region. Your expert wildlife guides will escort you through the museum and discuss the behavior and ecology of many of the mammals we will be tracking including bobcats\, javelinas\, coyotes\, grey foxes\, mule deer\, and many others. \nAfter leaving the desert museum we will head to Bisbee\, a ghost town from the nineteenth-century mining era that has now been revived. Here you will visit a local wildlife corridor to look for tracks and examine photos from camera traps for possible images of mountain lions and other stealthy animals that frequently pass through the area. \nAfterwards\, you will get to discuss the art of nature writing and journaling with Ken Lamberton\, the John Burrough’s award winning nature writer. Late in the day you will have time to wander through the streets and terraced mountain sides of Bisbee to take in the once bustling saloons now filled with art galleries\, and then grab dinner at a local restaurant before settling down for the evening in your cozy room.\n​\nAccommodations: Bisbee Lodge\nMeals Included: Lunch\n \n  \nDays 2-4 – Cuenca Los Ojos\nDeparting Bisbee early in the morning\, the group will head toward the Mexican border\, crossing over at Douglas\, Arizona and then continuing onto the Cuenca Los Ojos\, a preserve adjacent to the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. You will be welcomed by the friendly support staff who will help get you settled in\, and then your guides will go over the itinerary and what to expect during the next three days as well as give you an overview of the grassland\, mountain\, and riparian ecosystems that comprise the preserve lands. \nEach day at Cuenca Los Ojos the group will venture out on a different part of the landscape to look for animal sign. You will spend time in the grasslands\, in rugged canyons\, and along creek corridors looking for fresh tracks as well as along roadways and forested areas looking for other evidence of animal activity. Your expert guides will point out a variety of tracks and show you how to accurately identify them using morphology clues\, as well as how to ascertain animal gaits and associated behaviors. During early morning hours and around dusk\, you will also go out to look for sightings of the animals you are tracking. \nIn addition to looking for tracks and sign\, you will get to partake in bird language activities each day. Usually\, this will entail having the group spread out over a given area to perform an exercise called a bird “sit\,” with each individual recording their observations during a specified time interval. After the “sit” period is completed\, the group will reconvene and under the leadership of your avian guide\, you will perform a mapping debrief. This is a fascinating undertaking that pieces together each person’s observations and produces a comprehensive 4-dimensional story of what transpired during the observation period. \nYour guides will also instruct you on perfecting observational techniques\, including how to locate animals in the wild and strategies for finding areas of foraging\, bedding\, and socializing. They will also demonstrate where and how to setup camera traps\, how to set out track plates and make plaster casts of tracks\, and other methods for collecting data. You will also get to see the amazing techniques that have been utilized to restore this landscape to its former glory\, regenerating habitat that has once again made it a haven for wildlife. \nAccommodations: Preserve Lodge\nMeals Included: Breakfast\, Lunch\, Dinner\n \n \nDay 5 – San Pedro River\, Tombstone\, & Return to Tucson\nEarly morning you will depart Cuenca Los Ojos and drive back across the border\, crossing again at Douglas\, Arizona and then heading to a preserve along the San Pedro River\, one of the last free-flowing rivers in the American Southwest and a vital source of water for desert wildlife. Please meet at camp at 8:00AM. This is a one day project. If you arrive after 8:00AM\, someone in camp will direct you to the project worksite. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying 3 miles of existing boundary fence between the KJ and Bonita Ranches. This will entail removal of the bottom strand of barbed wire and replacing it with smooth wire 16″ above the ground. The fence consists of wooden and metal t-posts\, along with various stay materials. We will fix unrepairable stays with new and add metal t-posts at required locations. We will be able to utilize ATV’s along the fence line. Volunteer drop off and vehicle parking is available at the start points Location is North of the High Creek Road\, approx 1 mile West of the Bonita Store. \nPronghorn Benefits: This effort is located in direct proximity to ongoing mesquite removal for the Bonita Grasslands NRCS/G&F restoration project with a goal of improving up to 10\,000 acres in the next 4 years. Over the past 7 years\, the areas adjacent to and within this project have been grubbed\, new waters and boundary fence installed. These projects will help ensure that resident pronghorn and mule deer can safely utilize open grassland corridors without interference due to fence line obstructions. It will assist in accomplishing a key portion of the overall Bonita Plains pronghorn travel corridor improvement project. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunch to eat in the field on Saturday. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. HOWEVER\, DO KEEP IT ON YOUR RADAR\, ‘CAUSE THESE GILA CLIFF TRIPS ARE AWESOME! \nRegistration will open soon… \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. DESCRIPTION:Count Cormorants with the Arizona Game & Fish Dept.\nThe AZGFD needs your help in conducting research statewide to characterize cormorant populations and their distributions and impacts on fish. \n  \nThree options for helping out:  \n\nAssist with a one-day cormorant count at assigned water bodies or within a specific area that may contain multiple waters. You can sign up to help on any or all of the count dates (see below). This statewide count will take place during 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, and will occur on the specified dates over the next year:\n\nFall count: September 16\, 2017\nWinter count: January 20\, 2018\nSpring count: March 17\, 2018\n\n\nVisit a specified area at least once a month or 3 times during each quarter to document and record the presence and location of tagged cormorants. Time of day is flexible. This effort will start after June 2017 and we will notify volunteers to start looking for tagged birds once we begin captures. Volunteers assisting with this effort and the above opportunity may be asked to survey their assigned count areas.\nAssist with direct observations of cormorants feeding to determine size (and species as feasible) of fish being eaten at each site. This effort will focus primarily on community fishing waters in urban areas and time of day for observations is flexible. We’re asking volunteers to visit designated sites during each quarter of the year. These observations can also be made when you’re out fishing at other places\, hiking\, or picnicking near water where there are cormorants present!\n\n  \nHow to sign up!! \n\nEmail Larisa Harding (lharding@azgfd.gov) for a copy of the Volunteer enrollment form. The department needs volunteers throughout the year\, so even if you can’t help more than a day or two\, please inquire!\nAttend a training session! Training sessions will be scheduled primarily in August to prepare volunteers for the September count and increased cormorant activity in the fall. Location of training will be determined based on where volunteers are located. Training may take up to 2.5 hours and includes an orientation and discussion of survey methods for the quarterly counts (see above #1) and feeding observations (see above #3).\nBe prepared to complete some simple Department volunteer forms. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-tailed Prairie Dog Trapping\nThe Arizona Game and Fish Department needs help trapping Black-tailed Prairie Dogs from September 15th – 17th. \nThe Department has been re-establishing black-tailed prairie dogs since 2008 and every year they assess the animals health and determine an estimate of the population. You will have the opportunity to handle the prairie dogs and help collect measurements\, weight\, sex\, age\, and mark each animal. \nVolunteers will be trapping from sunrise to sunset. You will pass\nthe border patrol check station and continue on for another mile.\nVery close to MP40\, you will see a sign for Empire Ranch and turn\nleft or east into the ranch. Follow this road for 3 miles until the road\nT’s at a stop sign. Turn right or south and follow the road for another\n1 mile or so. You will drive through a wash and the left turn will be\njust before a cattle guard. Turn west or left on LC 6904. You will see \na big white sign that says “Black-tailed Prairie Dog Re-\nestablishment”.
