The Audubon Society reports: “prior to the turn of the 20th century\, hunters engaged in a holiday tradition known as the ‘Christmas Side Hunt.’ They would choose sides and go afield with their guns-whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages in that era\, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900\, ornithologist Frank M. DESCRIPTION:Native Plantings at Southern Galiuro Ponds\nDecember 8\, 2017 – December 9\, 2017\nCarianne Campbell: carianne@skyislandalliance.org \n  \nBACKGROUND \nSIA has partnered with the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and Tom Biebighauser of Wetland Restoration and Training LLC to install ponds near the Muleshoe Ranch in the southern Galiuros to provide habitat for lowland leopard frogs\, and potentially endangered Gila topminnows and desert pupfish. Many native bird\, bat\, dragonfly and butterfly species are sure to benefit from the new habitat as well. On this trip we will be installing native plants to jump start the revegetation process around the ponds and make sure there is a good variety of plants that will be beneficial to local wildlife. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n  \nPROJECT SCHEDULE & LOCATION \n\nFriday: Meet at 2:30 pm at our office: 406 S 4th Ave\, Tucson\, AZ 85701 at the SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St. To carpool or caravan to the site. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Spotlighting\nDecember 7th – 9th\, 2017 \n  \n The Black-footed Ferret Project will be a 3-night event December 7-9.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. SUMMARY:AZGFD Small Mammal Trapping (November)
DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Small Mammal Trapping\nArizona Game & Fish Department is looking for volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Lake Pleasant and Lake Havasu. We’ll have crews out during most weeks between early September and late November\, so if you have students that are available to come help\, we could likely put them to good use. Setting and checking traps will often require hiking in\, setting traps in the evening\, hiking out and staying the night somewhere nearby\, checking traps in the morning and processing animals. DESCRIPTION:Walnut Check-Up in the Santa Catalinas\n November 22\, 2017\nCarianne Campbell: carianne@skyislandalliance.org \n  \n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThe Santa Catalina grey squirrel (a subspecies of the Arizona grey squirrel) is in decline throughout the Catalinas and Rincons. Fire\, and competition with introduced Abert’s squirrels\, are thought to be some of the reasons for their lower numbers\, but we are hoping to give these beautiful animals a helping hand by improving some of their habitat on the mountain. With the help of the Forest Service and Borderlands Restoration\, we planted native walnut trees at several sites in the mountains to provide more of their favorite year-round food! Now we are going back to determine how many trees survived\, and to remove the cages we placed around the trees. \n\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\n\nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\n9 AM: Meet with SIA staff at the south end of the Safeway parking lot in the Madera Village Shopping Center: NE corner of Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway.\nSaturday 4:00 PM: We will work throughout the day\, and wrap things up around 4 PM.\nSaturday 5:00 PM: We will arrive back at our meeting spot by 5:00 PM or so.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be carrying buckets of water and caging materials through steep\, uneven terrain.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. Due to the possibility of surface water in the project area\, you might want to wear shoes/boots that you dont mind getting wet and or muddy. Aside from that\, anything you would bring on a long day hike would be recommended\, such as plenty of water\, lunch/snacks\, sun protection (sunscreen\, long pants and long-sleeved shirts)\, cloting appropriate for the weather\, etc.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \n\nTools\, work gloves\, supplemental drinking water and first aid equipment.\n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \n\nFamilies welcome!\nSorry\, dogs are not allowed on this project.\nThere is no fee involved for this project (although we will put any donations to good use!)

SUMMARY:AZGFD Small Mammal Trapping (Buckeye)
DESCRIPTION:Small Mammal Trapping with AZGFD (Buckeye)\n\nThe Arizona Game and Fish Dept. needs volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Buckeye. This is a great opportunity for interested volunteers to get involved with AZGFD projects. The first trapping event is October 11th-18th and the second is November 14th-21st. Volunteers are needed to help check traps in the morning in addition to processing rodents via data recording (no handling will be allowed). \nSix-hundred traps need to be set across the study area. Last week\, over 1000 animals were captured\, representing 7 different species. During the workshop\, we will take the opportunity to gather wildlife tracking data for Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. “We’ve actually seen elk on the preserve” — a rarity at the site’s elevation of 3\,300 feet. \n\nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n12 Noon Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 12 pm on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n4 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around 4 pm.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. The guesthouse is equipped with a full kitchen\, but fridge space can become limited so bring a cooler\, just in case. There are also indoor bathrooms/showers available\, but be conscious of everyone’s needs and don’t plan on lengthy showers. \nCampsites are grassy areas located at the guesthouse and are vehicle accessible. High clearance vehicles are recommended.  Aravaipa Creek is only a short walk away from the camping area.  Potable water is available; water from area creeks should be treated prior to consumption. \nSIA will not be providing any meals during this trip; you will need to bring enough food and water for breakfast\, packable lunches\, dinners\, and any snacks you desire. DESCRIPTION:Small Mammal Trapping with AZGFD (Buckeye)\n  \nThe Arizona Game and Fish Dept. needs volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Buckeye. This is a great opportunity for interested volunteers to get involved with AZGFD projects. The first trapping event is October 11th-18th and the second is November 14th-21st. Volunteers are needed to help check traps in the morning in addition to processing rodents via data recording (no handling will be allowed). \nSix-hundred traps need to be set across the study area. Last week\, over 1000 animals were captured\, representing 7 different species. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. You must be able to stay awake from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am! \nWhen signing up\, please sign up your group\, listing first & last names as well as if you are needing a vehicle to ride in or able to bring your own for the spotlighting. DESCRIPTION:Learn more and sign up here.\nItinerary\nDay 1 – Sonora Desert Museum and Bisbee\nYour group will meet early in the morning in Tucson\, Arizona and then head over to the nearby Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum to observe and learn about the animals that are native to the sky island region. Your expert wildlife guides will escort you through the museum and discuss the behavior and ecology of many of the mammals we will be tracking including bobcats\, javelinas\, coyotes\, grey foxes\, mule deer\, and many others. \nAfter leaving the desert museum we will head to Bisbee\, a ghost town from the nineteenth-century mining era that has now been revived. Here you will visit a local wildlife corridor to look for tracks and examine photos from camera traps for possible images of mountain lions and other stealthy animals that frequently pass through the area. \nAfterwards\, you will get to discuss the art of nature writing and journaling with Ken Lamberton\, the John Burrough’s award winning nature writer. Late in the day you will have time to wander through the streets and terraced mountain sides of Bisbee to take in the once bustling saloons now filled with art galleries\, and then grab dinner at a local restaurant before settling down for the evening in your cozy room.\n​\nAccommodations: Bisbee Lodge\nMeals Included: Lunch\n \n  \nDays 2-4 – Cuenca Los Ojos\nDeparting Bisbee early in the morning\, the group will head toward the Mexican border\, crossing over at Douglas\, Arizona and then continuing onto the Cuenca Los Ojos\, a preserve adjacent to the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. You will be welcomed by the friendly support staff who will help get you settled in\, and then your guides will go over the itinerary and what to expect during the next three days as well as give you an overview of the grassland\, mountain\, and riparian ecosystems that comprise the preserve lands. \nEach day at Cuenca Los Ojos the group will venture out on a different part of the landscape to look for animal sign. You will spend time in the grasslands\, in rugged canyons\, and along creek corridors looking for fresh tracks as well as along roadways and forested areas looking for other evidence of animal activity. Your expert guides will point out a variety of tracks and show you how to accurately identify them using morphology clues\, as well as how to ascertain animal gaits and associated behaviors. During early morning hours and around dusk\, you will also go out to look for sightings of the animals you are tracking. \nIn addition to looking for tracks and sign\, you will get to partake in bird language activities each day. Usually\, this will entail having the group spread out over a given area to perform an exercise called a bird “sit\,” with each individual recording their observations during a specified time interval. After the “sit” period is completed\, the group will reconvene and under the leadership of your avian guide\, you will perform a mapping debrief. This is a fascinating undertaking that pieces together each person’s observations and produces a comprehensive 4-dimensional story of what transpired during the observation period. \nYour guides will also instruct you on perfecting observational techniques\, including how to locate animals in the wild and strategies for finding areas of foraging\, bedding\, and socializing. They will also demonstrate where and how to setup camera traps\, how to set out track plates and make plaster casts of tracks\, and other methods for collecting data. You will also get to see the amazing techniques that have been utilized to restore this landscape to its former glory\, regenerating habitat that has once again made it a haven for wildlife. \nAccommodations: Preserve Lodge\nMeals Included: Breakfast\, Lunch\, Dinner\n \n \nDay 5 – San Pedro River\, Tombstone\, & Return to Tucson\nEarly morning you will depart Cuenca Los Ojos and drive back across the border\, crossing again at Douglas\, Arizona and then heading to a preserve along the San Pedro River\, one of the last free-flowing rivers in the American Southwest and a vital source of water for desert wildlife. The group will have a final opportunity to search for tracks and sign along the river banks\, before heading back to Tucson\, making one last stop at the historic old west town of Tombstone during the lunch hour. \nHere you can choose to visit the OK Corral\, scene of the famous gunfight between the town’s lawmen and local cattlemen\, or if you prefer\, take a tour of the fascinating Bird Cage Theater\, which was open 24 hours a day\, 365 days a year for eight years without ever closing. Supplies provided by the park include; trash bags\, and a limited supply of work gloves. DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHabitat Project: Bonita\nSeptember 30th\, 2017\nProject Location: We will be working on private lands approximately 31 miles North of Wilcox and 1 mile West of Bonita\, AZ off the High Creek Road. \nProject Begins: Saturday\, September 30th. Please meet at camp at 8:00AM. This is a one day project. If you arrive after 8:00AM\, someone in camp will direct you to the project worksite. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying 3 miles of existing boundary fence between the KJ and Bonita Ranches. This will entail removal of the bottom strand of barbed wire and replacing it with smooth wire 16″ above the ground. The fence consists of wooden and metal t-posts\, along with various stay materials. We will fix unrepairable stays with new and add metal t-posts at required locations. We will be able to utilize ATV’s along the fence line. Volunteer drop off and vehicle parking is available at the start points Location is North of the High Creek Road\, approx 1 mile West of the Bonita Store. \nPronghorn Benefits: This effort is located in direct proximity to ongoing mesquite removal for the Bonita Grasslands NRCS/G&F restoration project with a goal of improving up to 10\,000 acres in the next 4 years. Over the past 7 years\, the areas adjacent to and within this project have been grubbed\, new waters and boundary fence installed. These projects will help ensure that resident pronghorn and mule deer can safely utilize open grassland corridors without interference due to fence line obstructions. It will assist in accomplishing a key portion of the overall Bonita Plains pronghorn travel corridor improvement project. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunch to eat in the field on Saturday. The AAF will provide dinner for all volunteers on Friday and Saturday nights and continental breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings. \nWhat to Bring: WORK GLOVES (the AAF will have a limited supply)\, snacks\, water\, personal gear\, orange safety vest (if you have one). \n\nDirections\nCamp site will be on USFS lands\, approximately 1.5 miles West of the High Creek Road/Sunset Loop Intersection. DESCRIPTION:Pollinator Planting at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument\nSeptember 21 @ 10:00 AM – September 24 @ 8:00 PM\nBryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator: bryon@skyislandalliance.org \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \n\nOther important points: \nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case. \nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M. \nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the river. \n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThis is a family-friendly trip: let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if there are any special concerns.
