DESCRIPTION:Count Cormorants with the Arizona Game & Fish Dept.\nThe AZGFD needs your help in conducting research statewide to characterize cormorant populations and their distributions and impacts on fish. \nThree options for helping out: \n\nAssist with a one-day cormorant count at assigned water bodies or within a specific area that may contain multiple waters. You can sign up to help on any or all of the count dates (see below). This statewide count will take place during 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, and will occur on the specified dates over the next year:\n\nFall count: September 16\, 2017\nWinter count: January 20\, 2018\nSpring count: March 17\, 2018\n\n\nVisit a specified area at least once a month or 3 times during each quarter to document and record the presence and location of tagged cormorants. Time of day is flexible. This effort will start after June 2017 and we will notify volunteers to start looking for tagged birds once we begin captures. Volunteers assisting with this effort and the above opportunity may be asked to survey their assigned count areas.\nAssist with direct observations of cormorants feeding to determine size (and species as feasible) of fish being eaten at each site. This effort will focus primarily on community fishing waters in urban areas and time of day for observations is flexible. We’re asking volunteers to visit designated sites during each quarter of the year. DESCRIPTION:Jackrabbit Survey\nSaturday\, March 3rd\, 2018\n  \nSurvey Details: Surveys are walking transect surveys. Surveyors spread out in a line about 20m apart and walk forward\, flushing jackrabbits as they walk\, and record each animal. Each survey is about a mile long. The desert terrain varies from flat and lightly vegetated to hilly\, rocky\, and heavily vegetated. Other wildlife may be encountered\, including snakes. Surveyors should wear long pants\, boots or closed toe shoes\, and appropriate clothes for the weather (hat\, long sleeved shirt). Bring water\, snacks\, lunch if you’d like and sunscreen is advised. \nMeeting @ 8am on the corner of Sasabe Highway (Highway 286) and Arivaca Road (approx. coordinates 31.646625\, -111.498633). General directions from Tucson: go west on Ajo Highway (Highway 86) to Three Points. Go south on Highway 286 towards Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR). Meeting at the intersection of Highway 286 and Arivaca Road near mile marker 12. It’s about an hour and a half drive from the University of Arizona. Note that you will have to go through a Border Patrol checkpoint to reach BANWR. \nCamping is available on Friday evening on the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge at campsite 8 off of Highway 286\, off the east side of the road\, north of mile marker 17. This is primitive camping\, with no facilities or water. Please plan accordingly. The campsite is about 5 miles from the meeting spot. Three Points is about 27 miles to the north of the campsite. \nAfter we meet at 8am on Saturday\, we’ll caravan to the first survey location on BANWR. We will do the survey\, get back to our vehicles\, and caravan to King’s Anvil Ranch (off of Highway 286 about 8 miles south off Three Points) for the second survey. Surveys should be done by 1pm. \n\nPlease read through the details thoroughly. DESCRIPTION:  \nChristmas Bird Counts\nBoyce Thompson Arboretum\, Superior\, Oak Flat & Queen Valley \nSaturday\, December 23 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n\nHow did Christmas Bird Counts begin? The Audubon Society reports: “prior to the turn of the 20th century\, hunters engaged in a holiday tradition known as the ‘Christmas Side Hunt.’ They would choose sides and go afield with their guns-whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages in that era\, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900\, ornithologist Frank M. Many native bird\, bat\, dragonfly and butterfly species are sure to benefit from the new habitat as well. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Small Mammal Trapping\nArizona Game & Fish Department is looking for volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Lake Pleasant and Lake Havasu. DESCRIPTION:Walnut Check-Up in the Santa Catalinas\n November 22\, 2017\nCarianne Campbell: carianne@skyislandalliance.org \n  \n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThe Santa Catalina grey squirrel (a subspecies of the Arizona grey squirrel) is in decline throughout the Catalinas and Rincons. Fire\, and competition with introduced Abert’s squirrels\, are thought to be some of the reasons for their lower numbers\, but we are hoping to give these beautiful animals a helping hand by improving some of their habitat on the mountain. With the help of the Forest Service and Borderlands Restoration\, we planted native walnut trees at several sites in the mountains to provide more of their favorite year-round food! Now we are going back to determine how many trees survived\, and to remove the cages we placed around the trees. \n\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\n\nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\n9 AM: Meet with SIA staff at the south end of the Safeway parking lot in the Madera Village Shopping Center: NE corner of Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway.\nSaturday 4:00 PM: We will work throughout the day\, and wrap things up around 4 PM.\nSaturday 5:00 PM: We will arrive back at our meeting spot by 5:00 PM or so.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be carrying buckets of water and caging materials through steep\, uneven terrain.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. Due to the possibility of surface water in the project area\, you might want to wear shoes/boots that you dont mind getting wet and or muddy. This is a great opportunity for interested volunteers to get involved with AZGFD projects. The first trapping event is October 11th-18th and the second is November 14th-21st. Last week\, over 1000 animals were captured\, representing 7 different species. DESCRIPTION:Wildlife Tracking Workshop – Fall 2017 – Aravaipa\nThursday\, October 19\, 2017 – Sunday\, October 22\,2017\nBryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator: 520-624-7080 ext. 27 OR bryon@skyislandalliance.org \n  \nSAVE $100 IF YOU ARE A FULL-TIME STUDENT OR MEXICAN NATIONAL\nReduced Price = $195\n  \nJoin us for a four-day get-away in a spectacular Sky Island setting with Sky Island Alliance staff and regional guest experts.  Participants gain hands-on field instruction and theory in a variety of skills and techniques\, including: \n\nNatural history and conservation of regional animal species\, with emphasis on the jaguar\, Mexican gray wolf\, ocelot\, black bear\, mountain lion\, bobcat\, white-nose coati\, Mexican opossum\, badger\, desert tortoise\, and box turtle;\nWildlife track morphology\, structure and terminology;\nPhoto documentation;\nMotion-activated wildlife camera monitoring techniques;\nTrack casting and tracing techniques;\nAnimal gaits and movement; and\,\nHands-on experience with track identification in the field.  \n\n\nLOCATION:\nThis workshop will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Guesthouse in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). During the workshop\, we will take the opportunity to gather wildlife tracking data for Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. “We’ve actually seen elk on the preserve” — a rarity at the site’s elevation of 3\,300 feet. \n\nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n12 Noon Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 12 pm on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n4 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around 4 pm.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. The guesthouse is equipped with a full kitchen\, but fridge space can become limited so bring a cooler\, just in case. There are also indoor bathrooms/showers available\, but be conscious of everyone’s needs and don’t plan on lengthy showers. \nCampsites are grassy areas located at the guesthouse and are vehicle accessible. High clearance vehicles are recommended.  Aravaipa Creek is only a short walk away from the camping area.  Potable water is available; water from area creeks should be treated prior to consumption. \nSIA will not be providing any meals during this trip; you will need to bring enough food and water for breakfast\, packable lunches\, dinners\, and any snacks you desire. This means that you will want to be prepared with nine meals: from Thursday dinner to Sunday lunch. \nThe majority of the weekend will be spent outdoors and you can expect to spend time sitting\, and walking or strolling along wet creeks and dry riverbeds as we look for tracks and other wildlife sign.  We provide some blocks of free time\, but the schedule calls for long days\, starting around 8am and ending around 7 or 8 at night. \nAll course materials are included.  You will receive Mark Elbroch’s field guide Mammal Tracks and Sign:  A Guide to North American Species\, a tracking ruler\, laminated wildlife track identification field cards\, and a workshop packet.  We provide a one-year membership to Sky Island Alliance for non-member participants\, including a subscription to our Restoring Connections newsletter.\n \nPLEASE NOTE: \nNo dogs or pets are allowed on this trip.  Participants are required to sign our volunteer release form.  Youth ages 13-17 are welcome if joined by an accompanying adult. Workshop registration will close one week before the first date of the workshop\, or when full.  Please register online and during checkout specify payment by credit card or check. \nSky Island Alliance offers Wildlife Tracking Workshops twice a year\, in both spring and fall.  Our workshops alternate between overnight camping and bed and breakfast style accommodations in different outdoor settings around the Sky Island region; cost can vary slightly based on amenities offered\, but every workshop is taught at the same high quality standard. \n***Cancelation policy:  Due to the limited space availability for this particular workshop\, we cannot provide refunds for cancelation.  However\, we can accept substitutions.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \n\n\nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan at bryon@skyislandalliance.org.

This weekend we will work to remove invasive species and collect seeds that will be grown out to be re-planted in the canyon. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTRIP LOGISTICS \nFriday 2:00 PM: If you would like a ride down to the lake\, or if you want to caravan\, we will be meeting at the SIA office (406 S 4th Ave) at 2:00 PM Friday. \nFriday 4:00 PM: If you’d like to meet us at Parker Canyon Lake\, plan on joining us after 4:00 PM Friday. The location of our Campground is yet to be determined\, so stay tuned… \nSaturday: We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch. \nSunday: We will work through the morning and early afternoon (with a lunch break) and plan to be back to Tucson by 5:00 PM. \nTHE WORK AND WHAT TO KNOW\n \nOur tasks will involve collecting seeds from targeted plant species and removing invasive species such as Johnson grass and tree of heaven. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. Sky Island Alliance will provide all tools and instruction as well as extra copies of our volunteer waivers which need to be signed by each participant only once per calendar year. \nWHAT TO BRING \nWater\, snacks\, and meals for the weekend. \nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) with closed toes is encouraged as are rain gear and sun protection (ex. wide-brimmed hat\, sunblock\, long-sleeved shirt and long pants). \nCamping gear for the weekend\, such as tent\, sleeping bag and pad\, food and stove\, water bottle\, toiletries\, clothes\, etc. \nPROVIDED BY SIA \nNecessary tools and supplies for the weekend’s work and first aid. \nOur camp kitchen set up with stoves\, pots\, pans\, and utensils. Please feel free to bring your own as well\, if you like.
