SUMMARY:AAF - Southeast Sonoita Plains Fence Modification
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\n\nSoutheast Sonoita Plains Fence Modification\nCamp @ Rose Tree Corrals\nApril 13-15\, 2018\nSonoita\, AZ\nProject Location:  We will be working on 4 different locations in the southeast Sonoita Plains with very short drives from our base camp at the Rose Tree Corrals. \nProject Begins: Friday April 13th at 10AM (we need 15 volunteers on Friday)\, Saturday April 14th 7:30-5. Meet at camp for all start times. The campsite will be available on Thursday night. This is a 2-day project\, but we need the most volunteers on Saturday. If you can only work one day Saturday would be the best for our work crew allocations. \nProject Activity: On Friday we will be modifying and repairing a quarter mile section of fence that is an entrance into a newly identified “Fawning Pasture” as well as modifying a 500-foot section of fence on the south end of the Upper Elgin Road. On Saturday we will be modifying 2 fences both approximately .75 miles in length. On all fence locations we will be removing the 2 bottoms strands of barbed wire and replacing with a single strand of smooth wire at a height of 18 inches. Fence stays will be removed and replaced with new as needed. \nPronghorn Benefits: The good news! All 4 of these fence modifications have been caused by the increased herd in this area (now 120 animals minimum\, up from 17 in 2012) utilizing and pioneering suitable habitat areas previously unoccupied by Pronghorn.  This project is likely a final “Capstone” effort and will complete free pronghorn access in the southeastern portion of the Santa Cruz Plains pronghorn corridor improvement project. \nNFWF Grant Benefits: All volunteer work hours and mileage will be use as in-kind match for our 6-year our Southeastern Arizona Pronghorn Enhancement project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Arizona Game and Fish Habitat Partnership program. \nWhat to Bring: Workgloves (The AAF will have a limited supply)\, snacks\, water\, personal gear. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunches to eat in the field on the 3 work days.  The AAF will be providing dinners on both Friday and Saturday nights and continental breakfasts with coffee and juice on Saturday and Sunday mornings.\nContact: Glen Dickens at (520-247-4907) for project information. \nIf you are planning to attend\, please RSVP to info@azantelope.org by Monday April 9th so we can plan to have enough food and tools. \nDirections to Camp:  \nAAF project/camp site will be about 10 miles southeast of the intersection of Highways 83/82 at Sonoita. \nTravel 20 miles south of Tucson on I-10; turn south on Highway 83 and travel 25 miles to the town of Sonoita intersection. \nFrom this point turn east on Highway 82 and travel approximately 5 miles to the Upper Elgin paved road. \nTurn south again and follow AAF signs from that  point. Now we need to make sure our new additions to the canyon are able to get established! Come out and help us hold the space we’ve cleared of invasive fountain grass! \nPROJECT SCHEDULE (8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) \n\n8:00 a.m.: Meet SIA staff at the south end of the Safeway parking lot at the NE corner of Sabino Canyon Rd and Tanque Verde Rd to carpool into our work site.\n2:00 p.m.: We will arive back at our meeting spot.\n\nTHE WORK \nOur work will involve watering and mulching the plants we’ve installed earlier this year\, as well as clearing Bermuda grass from areas that we planted. We will be hiking on a desert trail to our worksite\, but then will be working in loose\, uneven terrain\, while carrying tools and/or buckets of water\, and negotiating a potentially flowing stream. Volunteers shold feel comfortable working in these conditions\, but do not need to have prior training to participate\, and SIA will provide all tools necessary. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\n\n\nIMPORTANT: United States Forest Service requires closed-toe shoes for this project. SUMMARY:AZGFD Cormorant Counts: March
DESCRIPTION:Count Cormorants with the Arizona Game & Fish Dept.\nThe AZGFD needs your help in conducting research statewide to characterize cormorant populations and their distributions and impacts on fish. \nThree options for helping out: \n\nAssist with a one-day cormorant count at assigned water bodies or within a specific area that may contain multiple waters. You can sign up to help on any or all of the count dates (see below). This statewide count will take place during 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, and will occur on the specified dates over the next year:\n\nFall count: September 16\, 2017\nWinter count: January 20\, 2018\nSpring count: March 17\, 2018\n\n\nVisit a specified area at least once a month or 3 times during each quarter to document and record the presence and location of tagged cormorants. Time of day is flexible. This effort will start after June 2017 and we will notify volunteers to start looking for tagged birds once we begin captures. Volunteers assisting with this effort and the above opportunity may be asked to survey their assigned count areas.\nAssist with direct observations of cormorants feeding to determine size (and species as feasible) of fish being eaten at each site. This effort will focus primarily on community fishing waters in urban areas and time of day for observations is flexible. We’re asking volunteers to visit designated sites during each quarter of the year. These observations can also be made when you’re out fishing at other places\, hiking\, or picnicking near water where there are cormorants present!\n\nHow to sign up!! \n\nEmail Larisa Harding (lharding@azgfd.gov) for a copy of the Volunteer enrollment form. The department needs volunteers throughout the year\, so even if you can’t help more than a day or two\, please inquire!\nAttend a training session! Training sessions will be scheduled primarily in August to prepare volunteers for the September count and increased cormorant activity in the fall. Location of training will be determined based on where volunteers are located. Training may take up to 2.5 hours and includes an orientation and discussion of survey methods for the quarterly counts (see above #1) and feeding observations (see above #3).\nBe prepared to complete some simple Department volunteer forms. DESCRIPTION:Jackrabbit Survey\nSaturday\, March 3rd\, 2018\n  \nSurvey Details: Surveys are walking transect surveys. Surveyors spread out in a line about 20m apart and walk forward\, flushing jackrabbits as they walk\, and record each animal. Each survey is about a mile long. The desert terrain varies from flat and lightly vegetated to hilly\, rocky\, and heavily vegetated. Other wildlife may be encountered\, including snakes. Surveyors should wear long pants\, boots or closed toe shoes\, and appropriate clothes for the weather (hat\, long sleeved shirt). Bring water\, snacks\, lunch if you’d like and sunscreen is advised. \nMeeting @ 8am on the corner of Sasabe Highway (Highway 286) and Arivaca Road (approx. coordinates 31.646625\, -111.498633). General directions from Tucson: go west on Ajo Highway (Highway 86) to Three Points. Go south on Highway 286 towards Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR). Meeting at the intersection of Highway 286 and Arivaca Road near mile marker 12. It’s about an hour and a half drive from the University of Arizona. Note that you will have to go through a Border Patrol checkpoint to reach BANWR. \nCamping is available on Friday evening on the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge at campsite 8 off of Highway 286\, off the east side of the road\, north of mile marker 17. This is primitive camping\, with no facilities or water. Please plan accordingly. The campsite is about 5 miles from the meeting spot. Three Points is about 27 miles to the north of the campsite. \nAfter we meet at 8am on Saturday\, we’ll caravan to the first survey location on BANWR. We will do the survey\, get back to our vehicles\, and caravan to King’s Anvil Ranch (off of Highway 286 about 8 miles south off Three Points) for the second survey. Surveys should be done by 1pm. \n\nPlease read through the details thoroughly. DESCRIPTION:Count Cormorants with the Arizona Game & Fish Dept.\nThe AZGFD needs your help in conducting research statewide to characterize cormorant populations and their distributions and impacts on fish. \n\nThree options for helping out: \n\nAssist with a one-day cormorant count at assigned water bodies or within a specific area that may contain multiple waters. You can sign up to help on any or all of the count dates (see below). This statewide count will take place during 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, and will occur on the specified dates over the next year:\n\nFall count: September 16\, 2017\nWinter count: January 20\, 2018\nSpring count: March 17\, 2018\n\n\nVisit a specified area at least once a month or 3 times during each quarter to document and record the presence and location of tagged cormorants. Time of day is flexible. This effort will start after June 2017 and we will notify volunteers to start looking for tagged birds once we begin captures. Volunteers assisting with this effort and the above opportunity may be asked to survey their assigned count areas.\nAssist with direct observations of cormorants feeding to determine size (and species as feasible) of fish being eaten at each site. This effort will focus primarily on community fishing waters in urban areas and time of day for observations is flexible. We’re asking volunteers to visit designated sites during each quarter of the year. These observations can also be made when you’re out fishing at other places\, hiking\, or picnicking near water where there are cormorants present!\n\n\nHow to sign up!! \n\nEmail Larisa Harding (lharding@azgfd.gov) for a copy of the Volunteer enrollment form. The department needs volunteers throughout the year\, so even if you can’t help more than a day or two\, please inquire!\nAttend a training session! Training sessions will be scheduled primarily in August to prepare volunteers for the September count and increased cormorant activity in the fall. The Audubon Society reports: “prior to the turn of the 20th century\, hunters engaged in a holiday tradition known as the ‘Christmas Side Hunt.’ They would choose sides and go afield with their guns-whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages in that era\, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900\, ornithologist Frank M. Many native bird\, bat\, dragonfly and butterfly species are sure to benefit from the new habitat as well. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Spotlighting\nDecember 7th – 9th\, 2017 \n  \n The Black-footed Ferret Project will be a 3-night event December 7-9.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Small Mammal Trapping\nArizona Game & Fish Department is looking for volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Lake Pleasant and Lake Havasu. We’ll have crews out during most weeks between early September and late November\, so if you have students that are available to come help\, we could likely put them to good use. Setting and checking traps will often require hiking in\, setting traps in the evening\, hiking out and staying the night somewhere nearby\, checking traps in the morning and processing animals. DESCRIPTION:Walnut Check-Up in the Santa Catalinas\n November 22\, 2017\nCarianne Campbell: carianne@skyislandalliance.org \n  \n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThe Santa Catalina grey squirrel (a subspecies of the Arizona grey squirrel) is in decline throughout the Catalinas and Rincons. Fire\, and competition with introduced Abert’s squirrels\, are thought to be some of the reasons for their lower numbers\, but we are hoping to give these beautiful animals a helping hand by improving some of their habitat on the mountain. With the help of the Forest Service and Borderlands Restoration\, we planted native walnut trees at several sites in the mountains to provide more of their favorite year-round food! Now we are going back to determine how many trees survived\, and to remove the cages we placed around the trees. \n\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\n\nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\n9 AM: Meet with SIA staff at the south end of the Safeway parking lot in the Madera Village Shopping Center: NE corner of Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway.\nSaturday 4:00 PM: We will work throughout the day\, and wrap things up around 4 PM.\nSaturday 5:00 PM: We will arrive back at our meeting spot by 5:00 PM or so.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be carrying buckets of water and caging materials through steep\, uneven terrain.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. Due to the possibility of surface water in the project area\, you might want to wear shoes/boots that you dont mind getting wet and or muddy. SUMMARY:2-day Wilderness Steward training (backpacking)
DESCRIPTION:The Arizona Wilderness Coalition and Tonto National Forest are partnering to provide a two-day backpacking adventure in the Superstition Wilderness\, as part of AWC’s Individual Wilderness Stewards Program. Participants and staff will backpack into one of Arizona’s first wilderness areas\, and learn the history of wilderness and the local ecology in the Superstition mountains. You will also gain an in-depth lesson on what it means to create solitude opportunities\, and how to do it\, so that you can come back and help complete surveys throughout the year. DESCRIPTION:Seed Collection & Invasives Removal Weekend in Parker Canyon\nOctober 13 @ 2:00 PM – October 15 @ 5:00 PM\nCarianne\, Field Coordinator: carianne@skyislandalliance.org \n  \nHelp us restore native plants for wildlife and pollinators in Parker Canyon! \nBACKGROUND \nSky Island Alliance is partnering with the Coronado National Forest and Borderlands Restoration to restore a diverse riparian understory of native plants for wildlife and pollinators in Parker Canyon! This weekend we will work to remove invasive species and collect seeds that will be grown out to be re-planted in the canyon. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTRIP LOGISTICS \nFriday 2:00 PM: If you would like a ride down to the lake\, or if you want to caravan\, we will be meeting at the SIA office (406 S 4th Ave) at 2:00 PM Friday. \nFriday 4:00 PM: If you’d like to meet us at Parker Canyon Lake\, plan on joining us after 4:00 PM Friday. The location of our Campground is yet to be determined\, so stay tuned… \nSaturday: We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch. \nSunday: We will work through the morning and early afternoon (with a lunch break) and plan to be back to Tucson by 5:00 PM. \nTHE WORK AND WHAT TO KNOW\n \nOur tasks will involve collecting seeds from targeted plant species and removing invasive species such as Johnson grass and tree of heaven. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. Sky Island Alliance will provide all tools and instruction as well as extra copies of our volunteer waivers which need to be signed by each participant only once per calendar year. \nWHAT TO BRING \nWater\, snacks\, and meals for the weekend. \nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) with closed toes is encouraged as are rain gear and sun protection (ex. wide-brimmed hat\, sunblock\, long-sleeved shirt and long pants). \nCamping gear for the weekend\, such as tent\, sleeping bag and pad\, food and stove\, water bottle\, toiletries\, clothes\, etc. \nPROVIDED BY SIA \nNecessary tools and supplies for the weekend’s work and first aid. \nOur camp kitchen set up with stoves\, pots\, pans\, and utensils. Please feel free to bring your own as well\, if you like.

SUMMARY:AZGFD Small Mammal Trapping - Buckeye
DESCRIPTION:Small Mammal Trapping with AZGFD (Buckeye)\n  \nThe Arizona Game and Fish Dept. needs volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Buckeye. This is a great opportunity for interested volunteers to get involved with AZGFD projects. The first trapping event is October 11th-18th and the second is November 14th-21st. Volunteers are needed to help check traps in the morning in addition to processing rodents via data recording (no handling will be allowed). \nSix-hundred traps need to be set across the study area. Last week\, over 1000 animals were captured\, representing 7 different species. Traps are opened an hour before sunrise and 2 hours after\, so they are early mornings but the work is fun! \nSome transportation to AZGFD Headquarters can be provided\, but if you are using a personal vehicle\, 4×4 capability is required. \n  \nCONTACT: Jonathan Miller @ JDMiller@azgfd.gov

SUMMARY:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Fall Spotlighting (October)
DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. You must be able to stay awake from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am! \nWhen signing up\, please sign up your group\, listing first & last names as well as if you are needing a vehicle to ride in or able to bring your own for the spotlighting. (No Rides provided to Seligman\, AZ!). 4×4 vehicles are preferred. Mileage is tax deductible.
