Fire\, and competition with introduced Abert’s squirrels\, are thought to be some of the reasons for their lower numbers\, but we are hoping to give these beautiful animals a helping hand by improving some of their habitat on the mountain. Therefore\, with the help of the Forest Service and Borderlands Restoration\, we are going to plant native walnut trees at several sites in the mountains to provide more of their favorite year-round food! \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\n¡Personal bilingüe estará presente en este viaje!\nSaturday 7:30 AM: Meet with SIA staff at our office to carpool to the Spencer Canyon Campground in the Santa Catalina Mountains.\nSaturday 9:00 AM: If you would like to meet SIA at the campground\, you may arrive at 9:00 AM. DESCRIPTION:Spring Assessments: Catalinas NE\nFriday\, May 12th – 14th\nSami Hammer: 520-624-7080 ext. 16 \nJURISDICTION: Coronado National Forest\, Santa Catalina Ranger District\n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThis weekend\, we will be assessing springs on the northeastern side of the Galiuro Mountains. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking). We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own 4WD vehicle (we will most likely be going down the Control Road). Please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nFriday 3:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Leave by 4:00 pm to camp somewhere on Mount Lemmon (TBD). Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast\, then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until about 3:30 pm\, then pack up and head home for a shower! We will try and be back to Tucson by 5 pm. \nTHE WORK \nAt the springs\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. \nSpring assessments require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. Springs in this area have limited road access\, so we will be driving on a high clearance\, possibly 4WD road\, and then hiking on and off trail to the springs\, up to about 3 miles each way. Each team will probably be able to assess 2-3 springs per day. We may hike as much as 8 miles in one day with part of that being off-trail. \nFor spring assessments\, prior training is not required\, but experienced volunteers and volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate or vertebrate identification skills are desired. \nCAMP LOCATION – TBD \nWe will caravan up to a camp site on Mount Lemmon (exact location TBD) for the weekend. It may be an undeveloped site\, so plan to bring your own water for drinking and washing (it’s a good idea to bring more than you think you will need)\, as well as trowels and toilet paper for bathroom breaks. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, mattresses\, stoves\, etc. that you might bring on any normal car camping trip.\nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear.\nSeveral gallons of water per person plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 6 meals out\, plus snacks.\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them!\nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike.\nIf you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it.\nVolunteer Agreement/Waiver – All volunteers need to sign the agreement annually. DESCRIPTION:BLM – Tucson Office – Manville Road Fence Volunteers\nIronwood Forest National Monument\n3201 E. Universal Way; Tucson\, AZ 85756\nApril 29th @ 8AM \n  \nDescription \nCreated by presidential proclamation in 2000 by Bill Clinton and taking its name from one of the longest living trees in the Arizona desert. The 129\,000-acre Ironwood Forest National Monument (IFNM) is a true Sonoran Desert showcase. However\, there are some areas on the IFNM where people have driven off road and created areas where vegetation is disturbed and the ground is torn up.  To prevent any further damage and to mitigate these issues\, the BLM initiated a fencing project to keep people on designated routes to protect wildlife habitat\, sensitive soils\, and areas of archaeological significance. \nPosition Summary \nA volunteer work day event will be taking place on the Ironwood Forest National Monument to help construct fence along Manville Road. This will be an all-day event. \nRequirements of/for volunteers \nMust be Physically Fit. \n\nMust able to lift 50 lbs. and walk for long distances in the heat.\nMust be 16 years or older.\nMust have personal vehicle or ability to carpool to worksite.\nMust be able to work safely in a group setting.\nMust be prepared to work under varied conditions\, including inclement weather and in remote locations.\nMust fill out and sign volunteer agreement form\n\nDuties and Responsibilities \nAssist with an ongoing fencing project which includes the following tasks: \n\nLifting barbed wire spool via rod and one other person to unroll wire safely\nWrapping wire and tying it tight using hands and fencing pliers\nUsing fence stretchers to pull wire taut\nUsing a t-post pounder to drive in t-posts\n\nTraining \nVolunteers will be briefed on Bureau of Land Management policies\, and training will occur on-site. Job Hazard Analysis for specialized equipment will occur prior to event. Most of the training will occur on-the-job\, as volunteers will be guided by Bureau of Land Management staff and interns. \nTime Commitment \nApril 29 at 8am \nSpecial Notice  \nThe monument is a travel corridor for illegal immigrants traveling from Mexico. All suspected illegal activities should be reported to BLM or local law enforcement authorities. Visitors should stay safe by avoiding contact with persons exhibiting suspicious behavior or engaged in dangerous activities. Drive with caution and look for fast-moving vehicles and pedestrians on back roads. Some roads are rugged: high clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended in those areas. \nHazards include poisonous snakes\, Africanized bees\, and potential encounters with illegal users of public land. Hunting is permitted through the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The national monument contains state trust lands and private lands. Recreation on state trust lands requires a permit from the State of Arizona. DESCRIPTION:Bear Canyon Fountain Grass Fight Club\nFirst rule of Fountain Grass Fight Club: You have to tell your friends about Fountain Grass Fight Club!!!\n \nJoin us for a new year driving fountain grass out of Bear Canyon. We are continuing our march through the canyon laying waste upon invasive grasses where ever we find them. Join us in this beautiful and popular canyon right in the foothills of the Santa Catalina’s. \n¡Personal bilingüe estará presente en este viaje! \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\n\n\n\nTRIP SCHEDULE \n\nPlan to meet us at the designated meeting spot (NE corner of Sabino Canyon Rd and Tanque Verde Rd\, at the south end of the Safeway parking lot) at 9 am.\nWe’ll return to the meeting spot by 3pm.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be digging out invasive grasses. The work will include bending and walking on uneven surfaces\, and potentially walking through water.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT.  Pants and long-sleeved shirts are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. SUMMARY:Arizona Antelope Foundation: Fence Modification Project
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHighway 83 / Babocomari Ranch \nFence Modification\nApril 14-16\, 2017\n\n  \nProject Location:  We will be working on ADOT Right-of-Way (ROW) fences on Highway 83 from Elgin School south. \nProject Begins: Friday April 14th at 10AM\, Saturday April 15th 8-5 and Sunday 8-12. Meet at camp for all start times. The campsite will be available on Thursday night. This is a 3-day project\, but we need the most volunteers on Saturday. If you can only work one day Saturday would be the best for our work crew allocations. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying approximately 2 miles of existing fence in 6 different segments on the ROW of HW83-South. We will be removing the 2 bottoms strands of barbed wire and replacing with a single strand of smooth wire at a height of 16 inches. All fence stays will be removed and replaced with new. We will also modify 3.5 miles of adjacent pasture fence removing 2 strands and replacing with a smooth wire at a height of 18 inches. \nPronghorn Benefits: This highway ROW travel corridor project will improve motorist safety and help ensure that pronghorn that are now regularly crossing HW83-South do not get hung up within the ROW.  This project is a “Capstone” effort and will complete free pronghorn access in the southern portion of the Santa Cruz Plains pronghorn corridor improvement project. \nNFWF Grant Benefits: All volunteer work hours and mileage will be use as in-kind match for our 6-year our Southeastern Arizona Pronghorn Enhancement project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Arizona Game and Fish Habitat Partnership program. \nWhat to Bring: Workgloves (The AAF will have a limited supply)\, snacks\, water\, personal gear. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunches to eat in the field on the 3 work days.  The AAF will be providing dinners on both Friday and Saturday nights and continental breakfasts with coffee and juice on Saturday and Sunday mornings.\n \nContact: Glen Dickens at (520-247-4907) for project information. \nIf you are planning to attend\, please RSVP to info@azantelope.org by Friday April 7th so we can plan to have enough food and tools. \nDirections to Camp:  \nAAF project/camp site will be about 10 miles southeast of the intersection of Highways 83/82 at Sonoita. \nTravel 20 miles south of Tucson on I-10; turn south on Highway 83 and travel 25 miles to the town of Sonoita intersection. \nFrom this point turn east on Highway 82 and travel approximately 5 miles to the Upper Elgin paved road. \nTurn south again and follow AAF signs from that  point. Camp will be located 4 miles south located on the east side of the roadway at the historic Rose Tree corrals and stone bunkhouse immediately adjacent to the roadway.

SUMMARY:SIA: Spring Assessments: Aravaipa Uplands in March
DESCRIPTION:Spring Assessments: Aravaipa Uplands in March\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\n\n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThis weekend\, we will be assessing springs in the upland watershed of Aravaipa Canyon. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking). We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own high clearance\, 4WD\, vehicle. Please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTRIP SCHEDULE \nFriday 1:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Drive out to camp in the uplands on the east or west side of Aravaipa Canyon. Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. Then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until about 2:00 pm\, then pack up and head home for a shower! We will try and be back to Tucson by 5 or 6 pm. \nTHE WORK \nAt the springs\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. \nSpring assessments require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. Springs in this area have limited road access\, so we will be driving on a high clearance\, 4WD road\, and then hiking off trail to the springs\, up to about 2 miles each way. Each team will probably be able to assess 2-3 springs per day. We may hike as much as 8 miles in one day with part or all of that being off-trail. \nFor spring assessments\, prior training is not required\, but experienced volunteers and volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate or vertebrate identification skills are desired. \nCAMP LOCATION \nWe will caravan out to the east or west side of Aravaipa\, and then explore a bit together to find a good camp site for the weekend. This project requires hiking roughly 6-8 miles per day over moderately hilly terrain. Each year the Field Institute monitors nest occupancy and success\, along with user compliance with temporary area closures. Great for building wildlife observation skills! Therefore\, with the help of the Forest Service and Borderlands Restoration\, we are going to plant native walnut trees at several sites in the mountains to provide more of their favorite year-round food! \nTRIP SCHEDULE \n\nFriday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office for to carpool to the campsite in the Santa Catalina Mountains. We will be staying at a ranch building\, but you will need camping gear as there are no beds available. This trip is free of charge and no experience is necessary. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\nBACKGROUND \nFor over a year we have been working to control erosion by building rock structures on National Forest lands that abut the Barboot Ranch. Now we have the chance to assist the ranch as they install 30\,000 native grass plugs that will also help to control erosion on the landscape\, as well as provide resources for wildlife\, and for the ranch’s sustainable cattle raising operation. \nTRIP SCHEDULE \n\nFriday\, 1:00 pm: Meet SIA staff at OUR NEW OFFICE – 406 S. 4th Avenue (at the corner of 14th in Armory Park). If you will be meeting us at ranch compound\, you can join us after 5:00pm – look for the green “SIA” sign off of Leslie Canyon Rd. A detailed map/directions will be sent when the time approaches.\nSaturday\, 8:00 am: Early breakfast and a rundown of the day’s activities. DESCRIPTION:Spring Assessments: Southern Galiuros (November)\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\n  \nBACKGROUND:\nThis weekend\, we will be hoping completing additional assessments of springs in preparation for controlled burns that will be conducted in the area next year (For those of you who came on our trips this spring\, the controlled burn was postponed\, giving us the chance to get to more springs!). It is unknown how fire affects spring ecosystems\, so this trip will be focused on collecting baseline information on springs before fire. We will be in the southern end of the Galiuros for these assessments\, at about 4000-5000′ elevation. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking). We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own high clearance\, 4WD\, vehicle. The road is rugged\, though not really technical. A Subaru Forester with off-road tires is probably about the minimum required for this road. Contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTRIP SCHEDULE:\nFriday 1:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Drive out to camp in the southern Galiuros. Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. Then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until about noon\, then pack up and head home for a shower! We will try and be back to Tucson by 5:00 pm. \nTHE WORK:\nAt the springs\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. Spring assessments require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. Springs in this area have very limited road access\, so we will be driving on a high clearance\, 4WD road some\, and then hiking off trail to the spring\, usually about 0.5 to 1 mile each way. The springs are usually up somewhat steep drainages\, so we may be clambering over some boulders. Each team will probably be able to assess 2-3 springs per day. We may hike as much as 8 miles in one day with part or all of that being off-trail. For spring assessments\, we are looking for volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate identification skills\, and strong hikers\, but no special skills are necessary. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. \nCAMP LOCATION:\nWe will caravan to the camp location north of the Muleshoe Ranch. It will be an undeveloped site\, so plan to bring your own water for drinking and washing (it’s a good idea to bring more than you think you will need)\, as well as trowels and toilet paper for bathroom breaks. \nWHAT TO BRING: \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, mattresses\, stoves\, etc. that you might bring on any normal car camping trip.\nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear.\nSeveral gallons of water per person plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 8 meals out\, plus snacks.\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them!\nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike.\nIf you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it.\nTransportation to and from the camp area to the work site will be provided by SIA staff members and volunteers with suitable vehicles.\nVolunteer Agreement/Waiver – All volunteers need to sign the agreement annually. We will have extras on-hand if this is your first time volunteering in 2016.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA:\nTools\, basic camp kitchen set-up including camp stove\, extra water\, cameras\, GPS\, data sheets\, maps\, first-aid kits. \nDue to the sensitive nature of springs\, dogs are not allowed. \nADDITIONAL INFORMATION:\nThis trip will be led by Sami Hammer. SUMMARY:Saguaro National Park: Weed-Free Trails Program
DESCRIPTION:Organized in February of 2008\, the goal of this program is for volunteers to monitor the trails\, mapping and removing exotic plants from these corridors and fulfilling the goal of “Early Detection\, Rapid Response”. Volunteers contributed 222 hours in 2008. In FY09\, seven volunteers became active in the program and surveyed almost all of the trails at Rincon Mountain District twice to account for various germination events. They removed 7.2 gross acres of invasive plants\, and contributed approximately 1\,050 hours to this effort. In 2013\, twelve volunteers monitored 1\,150 miles of trails\, removed 11 acres of invasive plants\, contributing approximately 1\,039 hours to the volunteer program. \nLooking for twenty-five active individuals. In 2014\, 30 interested individuals attended the 8 hour training and orientation. If interested\, volunteers must attend an orientation on October 28-29\, 2016 at Tucson Mountain District EE Center. \nExpectations of volunteers – tracking hours\, Plant ID\, Data collection and recording\, GPS training\, Outreach training\, Cultural training\, Radio & Safety training. Volunteers must go out at least three times during the WFT season to remain an active volunteer in the program. \nContact below for more information
