DESCRIPTION:Arizona Elk Society\nSlate Lakes Grassland Restoration \n  \nWHEN: July 15-16\, 2017 \nWHERE: Unit 7W off of HWY 180 Northwest of Flagstaff (approx. 30 miles Northwest on HWY 180 from Flagstaff) \nDESCRIPTION: The Arizona Elk Society will be hand cutting small jack pine trees and junipers to open grassland meadows to benefit wildlife by resetting the ecological clock for the grasslands. Over time the conifers from the surrounding forest invaded the grassland winter range and blocked vital connectivity for wildlife. The elk and antelope need our help to remove the invading trees to restore the grasslands. \nTOOLS: You can bring branch loppers and handsaws and gloves if you have them. We have tools for everyone. DO NOT BRING CHAIN SAWS. Please make sure to bring appropriate hats\, long sleeve shirts\, safety glasses\, sunblock\, etc. Be prepared for cool mornings and possibly rain. Old clothes are recommended for those working with the trees and sharp tools. \nCAMPING: Take HWY 180 NW out of Flagstaff about 30 miles to FR191 near Mile Marker 242.5. Head SW about 1/2 mile to CAMP (look for signs). Space will be available for vehicles\, tents and RV camping. HOWEVER\, DO KEEP IT ON YOUR RADAR\, ‘CAUSE THESE GILA CLIFF TRIPS ARE AWESOME! \nRegistration will open soon… \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \nOther important points: \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the river. \n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThis is a family-friendly trip: let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if there are any special concerns. SUMMARY:SIA: Aravaipa Canyon - June Riparian Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Aravaipa Canyon – June Riparian Restoration\nJune 22nd – 25th @ 2:30PM – 6:00PM\nBryon: 520-624-7080 ext. 27 \nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binocoulars! For more information about the Preserve:\nhttp://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/arizona/placesweprotect/aravaipa-canyon-preserve.xml \nWe will be working on the EAST SIDE of the canyon\, at the headwaters of the perennial creek. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\nGETTING THERE: \nDuring monsoon season\, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly encouraged. There are 2-3 wet wash crossings (yes\, there is perennial water!) before arriving at the guesthouse.  \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Thursday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2:\nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Thursday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. Travel eight miles past Fort Thomas and turn right onto Klondyke Road. Travel 28 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\nThursday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office for to carpool to the campsite in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Campsite TBD.\nThursday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Thursday. Follow our green SIA arrow sign for the correct turnoff.\nFriday 8:00 AM: Be prepared to go over the day’s work and head out. We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch.\nSaturday 8:00 AM: At it again.\nSunday 8:00 AM: Get started on the day’s work. We will finish up by early afternoon and then head back to Tucson.\nSunday 6:00 PM: We will be back to our Tucson office by 6:00 PM Sunday.\n\nTHE WORK: \nSky Island Alliance has been helping TNC and the BLM in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. During this trip we are continuing our work to remove the invasive plant vinca (or periwinkle) from the understory of the creek banks. This will require digging and fastidious removal of root material\, with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and getting dirty. We will be working in areas that have been previously cleared and potentially in some new spots as well. This work is part of our longterm goal of eradicating vinca from the entire canyon!  We will also be checking on native plants that we installed in previously cleared areas to improve pollinator habitat. \nWe will break into teams and work all day Friday and Saturday\, and Sunday morning\, to dig out vinca and install native plants. We’ll leave time in the afternoons for exploring the canyon – be sure to bring a camera and your binoculars! We will depart the canyon in the early afternoon on Sunday to return to Tucson by 6pm. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) has donated the use of the Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse\, nestled right along Aravaipa Creek.  TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms\, with showers and a full kitchen (with basic implements). There is also a screened sleeping porch\, and a bunkhouse with two rooms with beds. You may choose to sleep on a bed (bring your own comfy bedding) or camp under the stars in your tent. Beds will be first-come/first serve\, unless you let us know that you need to have priority. Nightly campfires are a big possibility. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 3 lunches\, and 3 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the creek.\nInsect repellent is a good idea this time of year!\n\nPLEASE NOTE: \nThis is a family-friendly trip; let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and any special concerns. SUMMARY:Arizona Antelope Foundation: Greer Fence Modification Project
DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHabitat Project: Greer Fence Modification\nJUNE 10\, 2017\nProject Location: We will be working on the Apache National Forest a few miles north of Big Lake in the White Mountains. \nProject Begins: Saturday June 10th at 7AM (sunrise is 5:00am!) and possibly Sunday 7-11. Meet at camp for all start times. The campsite is located about five miles east of the project site. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying approximately 2 miles of existing low hanging four strand fence by removing the bottom strand of barbed wire and replacing with a single strand of smooth wire at a height of 16 inches. \nPronghorn Benefits: The project is located in a high elevation grassland that is key summer range for pronghorn. The pronghorn must cross this fence while migrating between this summer range and lower elevation winter range. Improving this fence will also allow more access to the summer range. Retaining the travel connectivity within the summer range is critical to maintaining this population of pronghorn which summer and reproduce near Big Lake. This project is our second annual project to enhance habitat for these migratory pronghorn. Subsequent projects will work up into the primary summer range modifying and or removing livestock fences. \nVolunteer Benefits: All volunteer work hours and mileage will be use as in-kind match for federally funded wildlife enhancement projects including the Arizona Game and Fish Habitat Partnership program. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunches to eat in the field on Saturday work day. DESCRIPTION:Help the Arizona Game and Fish Dept. with Black-tailed Prairie Dogs at Las Cienegas\n  \nSupplemental Feeding \nHelp feed prairie dogs at Las Cienegas until the monsoon rains come and the grasses grow in July! Walk around colonies and place a small handful of pellets in each active (fresh diggings\, scat\, or prairie dogs) burrow. Alfalfa pellets are already on site near the observation towers. Volunteers are needed at least once a week every week until July. Volunteers will watch colonies from a hidden location (blind/vehicle/vegetation) and write down what they see (data sheet attached) during the morning and/or evening. Fire\, and competition with introduced Abert’s squirrels\, are thought to be some of the reasons for their lower numbers\, but we are hoping to give these beautiful animals a helping hand by improving some of their habitat on the mountain. Please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nFriday 3:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Leave by 4:00 pm to camp somewhere on Mount Lemmon (TBD). Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast\, then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until about 3:30 pm\, then pack up and head home for a shower! We will try and be back to Tucson by 5 pm. \nTHE WORK \nAt the springs\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. \nSpring assessments require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. Springs in this area have limited road access\, so we will be driving on a high clearance\, possibly 4WD road\, and then hiking on and off trail to the springs\, up to about 3 miles each way. Each team will probably be able to assess 2-3 springs per day. We may hike as much as 8 miles in one day with part of that being off-trail. \nFor spring assessments\, prior training is not required\, but experienced volunteers and volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate or vertebrate identification skills are desired. \nCAMP LOCATION – TBD \nWe will caravan up to a camp site on Mount Lemmon (exact location TBD) for the weekend. The 129\,000-acre Ironwood Forest National Monument (IFNM) is a true Sonoran Desert showcase. However\, there are some areas on the IFNM where people have driven off road and created areas where vegetation is disturbed and the ground is torn up.  To prevent any further damage and to mitigate these issues\, the BLM initiated a fencing project to keep people on designated routes to protect wildlife habitat\, sensitive soils\, and areas of archaeological significance. \nPosition Summary \nA volunteer work day event will be taking place on the Ironwood Forest National Monument to help construct fence along Manville Road. This will be an all-day event. \nRequirements of/for volunteers \nMust be Physically Fit. \n\nMust able to lift 50 lbs. and walk for long distances in the heat.\nMust be 16 years or older.\nMust have personal vehicle or ability to carpool to worksite.\nMust be able to work safely in a group setting.\nMust be prepared to work under varied conditions\, including inclement weather and in remote locations.\nMust fill out and sign volunteer agreement form\n\nDuties and Responsibilities \nAssist with an ongoing fencing project which includes the following tasks: \n\nLifting barbed wire spool via rod and one other person to unroll wire safely\nWrapping wire and tying it tight using hands and fencing pliers\nUsing fence stretchers to pull wire taut\nUsing a t-post pounder to drive in t-posts\n\nTraining \nVolunteers will be briefed on Bureau of Land Management policies\, and training will occur on-site. Drive with caution and look for fast-moving vehicles and pedestrians on back roads. DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHighway 83 / Babocomari Ranch \nFence Modification\nApril 14-16\, 2017\n\n  \nProject Location:  We will be working on ADOT Right-of-Way (ROW) fences on Highway 83 from Elgin School south. \nProject Begins: Friday April 14th at 10AM\, Saturday April 15th 8-5 and Sunday 8-12. Meet at camp for all start times. The campsite will be available on Thursday night. This is a 3-day project\, but we need the most volunteers on Saturday. If you can only work one day Saturday would be the best for our work crew allocations. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying approximately 2 miles of existing fence in 6 different segments on the ROW of HW83-South. We will be removing the 2 bottoms strands of barbed wire and replacing with a single strand of smooth wire at a height of 16 inches. All fence stays will be removed and replaced with new. DESCRIPTION:Spring Assessments: Aravaipa Uplands in March\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\n\n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThis weekend\, we will be assessing springs in the upland watershed of Aravaipa Canyon. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking). We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own high clearance\, 4WD\, vehicle. Please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTRIP SCHEDULE \nFriday 1:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Drive out to camp in the uplands on the east or west side of Aravaipa Canyon. Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. Then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until about 2:00 pm\, then pack up and head home for a shower! We will try and be back to Tucson by 5 or 6 pm. \nTHE WORK \nAt the springs\, we will be recording water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, making a map of the spring\, and documenting the flora and fauna. \nSpring assessments require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. Springs in this area have limited road access\, so we will be driving on a high clearance\, 4WD road\, and then hiking off trail to the springs\, up to about 2 miles each way. Each team will probably be able to assess 2-3 springs per day. We may hike as much as 8 miles in one day with part or all of that being off-trail. \nFor spring assessments\, prior training is not required\, but experienced volunteers and volunteers with tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate or vertebrate identification skills are desired. \nCAMP LOCATION \nWe will caravan out to the east or west side of Aravaipa\, and then explore a bit together to find a good camp site for the weekend. It will be an undeveloped site\, so plan to bring your own water for drinking and washing (it’s a good idea to bring more than you think you will need)\, as well as trowels and toilet paper for bathroom breaks. \nWHAT TO BRING \n\nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, mattresses\, stoves\, etc. that you might bring on any normal car camping trip.\nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear.\nSeveral gallons of water per person plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 6 meals out\, plus snacks.\nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.\nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. If you have gaiters\, bring them!\nAnything else you would normally bring for a dayhike.\nIf you need to carry an EpiPen\, please bring it.\nVolunteer Agreement/Waiver – All volunteers need to sign the agreement annually. DESCRIPTION:Burrowing Owl Volunteers Wanted\nList of Burrowing Owl Events for 2017:\n\nFebruary 25th\, install 32 burrows in Laveen\nMarch 4th\, construct one tent near Maricopa. Some same-day site prep also needed\nMarch 11th\, construct one tent near Coolidge\nMarch 18th\, construct two tents near Maricopa. Some same-day site prep also needed\nMarch 25th\, construct one tent in San Tan Valley.  See special note below\nApril 1st\, take down one tent near Maricopa\nApril 8th\, take down one tent near Coolidge\nApril 15th\, take down two tents near Maricopa\nApril 22nd\, take down one tent\, San Tan Valley\nApril 29th\, construct one tent in Tucson\, Paseo de las Iglesias section of River Park\nMay 27th\, take down one tent in Tucson\n\nOwl Feeding (three volunteers needed):\nSan Tan Valley tent after March 25th\, for 5 weeks. Volunteers need to be available during the entire five week period. One volunteer will feed the owls Mon-Friday and another will feed on Saturday and Sunday. The third volunteer is a fill in for days the other two cannot make it. Feeding the owls requires volunteers to store bags of frozen mice in their freezers (mice do not smell). Mice will need to be thawed and taken to the feeding site. DESCRIPTION:Beat Back Buffelgrass Day 2017\nCelebrate Beat Back Buffelgrass Day for 2017 with Sky Island Alliance\, making a difference in your local wild lands!\n \n¡Personal bilingüe estará presente en este viaje! \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER!\n\n\nTRIP SCHEDULEPlan to meet us at the South end of the Safeway parking lot on the NE corner of Sabino Canyon and Tanque Verde at 8 am. We’ll return to the meeting spot by 3pm. We will shuttle/carpool to the actual work site in Bear Canyon from our meeting spot\, as we will be driving into an area of the National Forest with restricted access and limited parking. \nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be digging out invasive grasses. The work will include bending and walking on uneven surfaces\, and potentially walking through water.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. Aside from that\, anything you would bring on a long day hike would be recommended\, such as plenty of water\, lunch/snacks\, sun protection (sunscreen\, long pants and long-sleeved shirts)\, etc.\n\nPROVIDED BY SIA \n\nTools\, work gloves\, supplemental drinking water and first aid equipment.  Tools involved – shovels\, picks\, and metal pry bars will be our main weapons against these invasive plants.  Chemical herbicides will NOT be used.\n\nADDITIONAL INFORMATION \n\nThis trip will be led by Bryon Lichtenhan.\n¡Personal bilingüe estará presente en este viaje!\nFamilies are welcome!\nSorry\, dogs are not allowed on this project.\nThere is no fee involved for this project (although we will put any donations to good use!)\n\nQuestions?  Contact Bryon:  bryon@skyislandalliance.org or ext. 27

SUMMARY:McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Field Institute - Student Volunteer Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Field Institute\n  \n1.) Restoring Native Vegetation on closed trails – an experimental approach:  \nDescription: \nTrails that are closed often leave visible scars on the landscape\, which can be mitigated using a variety of restoration techniques. However\, very little is known about the effectiveness of the various techniques\, especially in the Sonoran Desert. The purpose of this study is to test various restoration techniques on trails that are being closed\, in order to develop best practives and methods for restoring closed trails to natural condition in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. This project requires hiking roughly 6-8 miles per day over moderately hilly terrain. Field Dates: 8:00AM – 2:00PM on: February 21\, 23\, 25\, 28\, March 4. TRAINING REQUIRED. \n  \n2.) Raptor/Prairie Falcon Training \nDescription: \nTom’s Thumb\, a favorite hiking and climbing destination spot in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve\, provides critical nesting habitat for several falcon species. Each year the Field Institute monitors nest occupancy and success\, along with user compliance with temporary area closures. Great for building wildlife observation skills! This project requires a steep\, 2.5 mile hike to the observation point. Please contact Melanie at Melanie@mcdowellsonoran.org to sign up for training. Training: Falcon behavior and natural history – January 12\, 6-8PM @ Scottsdale Community College\, Science Lecture Building Room 116; Monitoring falcon nest success – January 19\, 3-5PM @ McDowell Sonoran Preserve Gateway Trailhead. Fieldwork: Flexible\, will be conducted 1-2 times per week during peak times between February – June 2017. Volunteers will need to sign up for field dates on a monthly basis via doodle poll. TRAINING REQUIRED. \n  \n3.) Fountain grass and buffelgrass removal experiment: \nDescription: \nFountain grass and buffelgrass are two recently introduced and highly prolific plants that are shown to have a negative effect on native plant biodiversity as well as Sonoran Desert tortoise habitat. In the spring of 2017\, we will initiate several large-scale\, experimental removals of the two grass species in an attempt to determine the most efficient and effective removal techniques\, while having the least impact on native vegetation. Plant lifecycle (Phenology) study in-the-field training \nDescription: \nPhenology is nature;s calendar – when saguaros bloom\, white-winged doves build nests and young leaves appear on a velvet mesquite.
