This weekend we will work to remove invasive species and collect seeds that will be grown out to be re-planted in the canyon. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \nTRIP LOGISTICS \nFriday 2:00 PM: If you would like a ride down to the lake\, or if you want to caravan\, we will be meeting at the SIA office (406 S 4th Ave) at 2:00 PM Friday. \nFriday 4:00 PM: If you’d like to meet us at Parker Canyon Lake\, plan on joining us after 4:00 PM Friday. The location of our Campground is yet to be determined\, so stay tuned… \nSaturday: We will work throughout the day with a break for lunch. \nSunday: We will work through the morning and early afternoon (with a lunch break) and plan to be back to Tucson by 5:00 PM. \nTHE WORK AND WHAT TO KNOW\n \nOur tasks will involve collecting seeds from targeted plant species and removing invasive species such as Johnson grass and tree of heaven. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. Sky Island Alliance will provide all tools and instruction as well as extra copies of our volunteer waivers which need to be signed by each participant only once per calendar year. \nWHAT TO BRING \nWater\, snacks\, and meals for the weekend. \nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) with closed toes is encouraged as are rain gear and sun protection (ex. wide-brimmed hat\, sunblock\, long-sleeved shirt and long pants). \nCamping gear for the weekend\, such as tent\, sleeping bag and pad\, food and stove\, water bottle\, toiletries\, clothes\, etc. \nPROVIDED BY SIA \nNecessary tools and supplies for the weekend’s work and first aid. \nOur camp kitchen set up with stoves\, pots\, pans\, and utensils. DESCRIPTION:Small Mammal Trapping with AZGFD (Buckeye)\n  \nThe Arizona Game and Fish Dept. needs volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Buckeye. This is a great opportunity for interested volunteers to get involved with AZGFD projects. The first trapping event is October 11th-18th and the second is November 14th-21st. Volunteers are needed to help check traps in the morning in addition to processing rodents via data recording (no handling will be allowed). \nSix-hundred traps need to be set across the study area. Last week\, over 1000 animals were captured\, representing 7 different species. SUMMARY:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Fall Spotlighting (October)
DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. You must be able to stay awake from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am! \nWhen signing up\, please sign up your group\, listing first & last names as well as if you are needing a vehicle to ride in or able to bring your own for the spotlighting. DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHabitat Project: Bonita\nSeptember 30th\, 2017\nProject Location: We will be working on private lands approximately 31 miles North of Wilcox and 1 mile West of Bonita\, AZ off the High Creek Road. \nProject Begins: Saturday\, September 30th. Please meet at camp at 8:00AM. This is a one day project. If you arrive after 8:00AM\, someone in camp will direct you to the project worksite. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying 3 miles of existing boundary fence between the KJ and Bonita Ranches. This will entail removal of the bottom strand of barbed wire and replacing it with smooth wire 16″ above the ground. The fence consists of wooden and metal t-posts\, along with various stay materials. We will fix unrepairable stays with new and add metal t-posts at required locations. We will be able to utilize ATV’s along the fence line. Volunteer drop off and vehicle parking is available at the start points Location is North of the High Creek Road\, approx 1 mile West of the Bonita Store. \nPronghorn Benefits: This effort is located in direct proximity to ongoing mesquite removal for the Bonita Grasslands NRCS/G&F restoration project with a goal of improving up to 10\,000 acres in the next 4 years. Over the past 7 years\, the areas adjacent to and within this project have been grubbed\, new waters and boundary fence installed. These projects will help ensure that resident pronghorn and mule deer can safely utilize open grassland corridors without interference due to fence line obstructions. It will assist in accomplishing a key portion of the overall Bonita Plains pronghorn travel corridor improvement project. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunch to eat in the field on Saturday. DESCRIPTION:Pollinator Planting at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument\nSeptember 21 @ 10:00 AM – September 24 @ 8:00 PM\nBryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator: bryon@skyislandalliance.org \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \n\nOther important points: \nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case. \nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M. \nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the river. \n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThis is a family-friendly trip: let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if there are any special concerns. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \nOther important points: \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. DESCRIPTION:Count Cormorants with the Arizona Game & Fish Dept.\nThe AZGFD needs your help in conducting research statewide to characterize cormorant populations and their distributions and impacts on fish. \n  \nThree options for helping out:  \n\nAssist with a one-day cormorant count at assigned water bodies or within a specific area that may contain multiple waters. You can sign up to help on any or all of the count dates (see below). This statewide count will take place during 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, and will occur on the specified dates over the next year:\n\nFall count: September 16\, 2017\nWinter count: January 20\, 2018\nSpring count: March 17\, 2018\n\n\nVisit a specified area at least once a month or 3 times during each quarter to document and record the presence and location of tagged cormorants. Time of day is flexible. This effort will start after June 2017 and we will notify volunteers to start looking for tagged birds once we begin captures. Volunteers assisting with this effort and the above opportunity may be asked to survey their assigned count areas.\nAssist with direct observations of cormorants feeding to determine size (and species as feasible) of fish being eaten at each site. This effort will focus primarily on community fishing waters in urban areas and time of day for observations is flexible. We’re asking volunteers to visit designated sites during each quarter of the year. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. You must be able to stay awake from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am! \nWhen signing up\, please sign up your group\, listing first & last names as well as if you are needing a vehicle to ride in or able to bring your own for the spotlighting. Wrightson\, Pajarita\, and Santa Teresa wilderness areas. This weekend\, we will be working to assess springs and other water resources in the Galiuro Wilderness area. \nYou should be comfortable hiking off-trail (bushwhacking) in very rugged and steep terrain. Some assessments will require hiking all day (perhaps 12 miles or more) both on and off trail. You should be a strong and experienced hiker to accompany us on this trip. We will have spots for 3-5 people in the SIA vehicles\, but after these fill up\, you’ll need to bring your own high clearance\, 4WD\, vehicle. The roads into our potential campsites are rugged\, please contact us to check if your vehicle is suitable. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\nTRIP SCHEDULE \nFriday 1:30 pm:  Meet SIA staff at our office (406 S. 4th Ave\, north side of SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St). Drive out to camp in the southern Galiuros. Set up camp and enjoy the evening. \nSaturday 8:00 am: Breakfast with a quick refresher on use of spring assessment equipment. Then split up into teams and work through the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nSunday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work throughout the day\, returning to camp around 5:00 pm. \nMonday 8:00 am: Continue assessment work until lunch time\, then pack up camp and head back to Tucson. We should arrive back at the office by 6pm Monday evening. \n\nTHE WORK \nAt our work sites\, we will be recording data such as water quality and quantity\, taking photographs\, documenting the flora and fauna\, and assessing the condition of the site. These assessments will require hiking off-trail\, potentially in steep terrain. The sites are usually up somewhat steep drainages\, so we may be clambering over and around boulders at times. Each team will hopefully be able to assess 2-3 sites per day. We may hike as much as 12 miles in one day with part or all of that being off-trail. For these assessments\, no special skills are necessary\, but we are looking for strong hikers\, and tracking skills\, plant identification skills\, invertebrate identification skills can be helpful. Volunteers do not need to have prior training to participate. \nCAMP LOCATION \nCamp location has yet to be determined\, but it will almost certainly be a wilderness campsite. \n\nWHAT TO BRING \nAll tents\, sleeping bags\, sleeping pad\, stove\, etc. that you might bring on any multi-day backpacking trip. \nPlease bring a larger backpack in which to carry shared springs assessment gear. \nRe-usable water vessels such as bottles or bladders\, a water filter\, or disinfecting method\, plus all the food you’ll need for a minimum of 9 meals out\, plus snacks. \nSturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots\, sandals) plus clothing for wet and cold weather\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc. \nLong\, tough pants are strongly recommended. Over time the conifers from the surrounding forest invaded the grassland winter range and blocked vital connectivity for wildlife. The elk and antelope need our help to remove the invading trees to restore the grasslands. \nTOOLS: You can bring branch loppers and handsaws and gloves if you have them. We have tools for everyone. DO NOT BRING CHAIN SAWS. Please make sure to bring appropriate hats\, long sleeve shirts\, safety glasses\, sunblock\, etc. Be prepared for cool mornings and possibly rain. HOWEVER\, DO KEEP IT ON YOUR RADAR\, ‘CAUSE THESE GILA CLIFF TRIPS ARE AWESOME! \nRegistration will open soon… \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \nOther important points: \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. DESCRIPTION:Aravaipa Canyon – June Riparian Restoration\nJune 22nd – 25th @ 2:30PM – 6:00PM\nBryon: 520-624-7080 ext. 27 \nAravaipa Canyon is located in the northern Galiuro Mountains and only a few miles from the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness. The Preserve is only 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona as the bird flies (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. With over 10 miles of perennial water\, Aravaipa Canyon is a rare riparian jewel in southern Arizona; it is an important tributary to the Lower San Pedro River. We always see a variety of wildlife in Aravaipa Canyon\, you will want to have your binocoulars! For more information about the Preserve:\nhttp://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/arizona/placesweprotect/aravaipa-canyon-preserve.xml \nWe will be working on the EAST SIDE of the canyon\, at the headwaters of the perennial creek. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE!\nGETTING THERE: \nDuring monsoon season\, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly encouraged. There are 2-3 wet wash crossings (yes\, there is perennial water!) before arriving at the guesthouse.  \nOption 1:\nMeet at the SIA office at 406 S 4th Ave to caravan/carpool to Aravaipa Canyon at 2:30 pm on Thursday. We have limited room for passengers in vehicles – please let us know ahead of time if you need a ride so we can ensure space for everyone (or if you’d like to drive your personal vehicle and have space for a passenger). \nWe will head east on 1-10 toward Willcox (and a bathroom break) before heading off toward the northwest for the canyon. The last 40 miles or so are on a well-maintained dirt road. \nOption 2:\nIf you have been there before and would like to meet us out there\, just let us know when to expect you on Thursday evening. \nFrom Tucson: (155 miles) Take I-10 east to Willcox exit 340. Turn left onto Fort Grant Road and go north 30 miles to Bonita. Turn left onto Klondyke Road and go 32 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nFrom Phoenix: (190 miles) Take Highway 60 east to Globe\, then U.S. 70 south to Fort Thomas. Travel eight miles past Fort Thomas and turn right onto Klondyke Road. Travel 28 miles to Klondyke. Preserve entrance is seven miles past Klondyke. The last 38 miles is a gravel road and subject to closure during wet weather. \nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\nThursday 2:30 PM: Meet with SIA staff at our office for to carpool to the campsite in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Campsite TBD.\nThursday 6:00 PM: If you would like to meet SIA at the guesthouse\, you may arrive after 6:00 PM on Thursday. Follow our green SIA arrow sign for the correct turnoff.\nFriday 8:00 AM: Be prepared to go over the day’s work and head out. We will finish up by early afternoon and then head back to Tucson.\nSunday 6:00 PM: We will be back to our Tucson office by 6:00 PM Sunday.\n\nTHE WORK: \nSky Island Alliance has been helping TNC and the BLM in Aravaipa Canyon for several years on a variety of projects to increase watershed health along this perennial riparian area. During this trip we are continuing our work to remove the invasive plant vinca (or periwinkle) from the understory of the creek banks. This will require digging and fastidious removal of root material\, with tools provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and getting dirty. We will be working in areas that have been previously cleared and potentially in some new spots as well. This work is part of our longterm goal of eradicating vinca from the entire canyon!  We will also be checking on native plants that we installed in previously cleared areas to improve pollinator habitat. \nWe will break into teams and work all day Friday and Saturday\, and Sunday morning\, to dig out vinca and install native plants. We’ll leave time in the afternoons for exploring the canyon – be sure to bring a camera and your binoculars! We will depart the canyon in the early afternoon on Sunday to return to Tucson by 6pm. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nThe Nature Conservancy (TNC) has donated the use of the Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse\, nestled right along Aravaipa Creek.  TNC’s Aravaipa Canyon Preserve guesthouse has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms\, with showers and a full kitchen (with basic implements). There is also a screened sleeping porch\, and a bunkhouse with two rooms with beds. You may choose to sleep on a bed (bring your own comfy bedding) or camp under the stars in your tent. Beds will be first-come/first serve\, unless you let us know that you need to have priority. Nightly campfires are a big possibility. \n\nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 3 lunches\, and 3 dinners\, with snacks.\nPotable water is available onsite\, along with communal refrigerator space.\nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cellphone or internet service at Aravaipa Canyon.\nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the creek.\nInsect repellent is a good idea this time of year!\n\nPLEASE NOTE: \nThis is a family-friendly trip; let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and any special concerns. DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHabitat Project: Greer Fence Modification\nJUNE 10\, 2017\nProject Location: We will be working on the Apache National Forest a few miles north of Big Lake in the White Mountains. \nProject Begins: Saturday June 10th at 7AM (sunrise is 5:00am!) and possibly Sunday 7-11. Meet at camp for all start times. The campsite is located about five miles east of the project site. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying approximately 2 miles of existing low hanging four strand fence by removing the bottom strand of barbed wire and replacing with a single strand of smooth wire at a height of 16 inches. \nPronghorn Benefits: The project is located in a high elevation grassland that is key summer range for pronghorn. The pronghorn must cross this fence while migrating between this summer range and lower elevation winter range. Improving this fence will also allow more access to the summer range. Retaining the travel connectivity within the summer range is critical to maintaining this population of pronghorn which summer and reproduce near Big Lake. This project is our second annual project to enhance habitat for these migratory pronghorn. Subsequent projects will work up into the primary summer range modifying and or removing livestock fences. \nVolunteer Benefits: All volunteer work hours and mileage will be use as in-kind match for federally funded wildlife enhancement projects including the Arizona Game and Fish Habitat Partnership program. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunches to eat in the field on Saturday work day. Walk around colonies and place a small handful of pellets in each active (fresh diggings\, scat\, or prairie dogs) burrow. Alfalfa pellets are already on site near the observation towers. Volunteers are needed at least once a week every week until July.
