DESCRIPTION:Count Cormorants with the Arizona Game & Fish Dept.\nThe AZGFD needs your help in conducting research statewide to characterize cormorant populations and their distributions and impacts on fish. \nThree options for helping out: \n\nAssist with a one-day cormorant count at assigned water bodies or within a specific area that may contain multiple waters. You can sign up to help on any or all of the count dates (see below). This statewide count will take place during 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM\, and will occur on the specified dates over the next year:\n\nFall count: September 16\, 2017\nWinter count: January 20\, 2018\nSpring count: March 17\, 2018\n\n\nVisit a specified area at least once a month or 3 times during each quarter to document and record the presence and location of tagged cormorants. Time of day is flexible. This effort will start after June 2017 and we will notify volunteers to start looking for tagged birds once we begin captures. Volunteers assisting with this effort and the above opportunity may be asked to survey their assigned count areas.\nAssist with direct observations of cormorants feeding to determine size (and species as feasible) of fish being eaten at each site. This effort will focus primarily on community fishing waters in urban areas and time of day for observations is flexible. We’re asking volunteers to visit designated sites during each quarter of the year. DESCRIPTION:Jackrabbit Survey\nSaturday\, March 3rd\, 2018\n  \nSurvey Details: Surveys are walking transect surveys. Surveyors spread out in a line about 20m apart and walk forward\, flushing jackrabbits as they walk\, and record each animal. Each survey is about a mile long. The desert terrain varies from flat and lightly vegetated to hilly\, rocky\, and heavily vegetated. Other wildlife may be encountered\, including snakes. Surveyors should wear long pants\, boots or closed toe shoes\, and appropriate clothes for the weather (hat\, long sleeved shirt). Bring water\, snacks\, lunch if you’d like and sunscreen is advised. \nMeeting @ 8am on the corner of Sasabe Highway (Highway 286) and Arivaca Road (approx. coordinates 31.646625\, -111.498633). General directions from Tucson: go west on Ajo Highway (Highway 86) to Three Points. Go south on Highway 286 towards Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR). Meeting at the intersection of Highway 286 and Arivaca Road near mile marker 12. It’s about an hour and a half drive from the University of Arizona. Note that you will have to go through a Border Patrol checkpoint to reach BANWR. \nCamping is available on Friday evening on the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge at campsite 8 off of Highway 286\, off the east side of the road\, north of mile marker 17. This is primitive camping\, with no facilities or water. Please plan accordingly. The campsite is about 5 miles from the meeting spot. Three Points is about 27 miles to the north of the campsite. \nAfter we meet at 8am on Saturday\, we’ll caravan to the first survey location on BANWR. We will do the survey\, get back to our vehicles\, and caravan to King’s Anvil Ranch (off of Highway 286 about 8 miles south off Three Points) for the second survey. Surveys should be done by 1pm. \n\nPlease read through the details thoroughly. The Audubon Society reports: “prior to the turn of the 20th century\, hunters engaged in a holiday tradition known as the ‘Christmas Side Hunt.’ They would choose sides and go afield with their guns-whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages in that era\, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900\, ornithologist Frank M. Many native bird\, bat\, dragonfly and butterfly species are sure to benefit from the new habitat as well. On this trip we will be installing native plants to jump start the revegetation process around the ponds and make sure there is a good variety of plants that will be beneficial to local wildlife. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n  \nPROJECT SCHEDULE & LOCATION \n\nFriday: Meet at 2:30 pm at our office: 406 S 4th Ave\, Tucson\, AZ 85701 at the SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St. To carpool or caravan to the site. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Small Mammal Trapping\nArizona Game & Fish Department is looking for volunteers to help set small mammal traps (Shermans) near Lake Pleasant and Lake Havasu. DESCRIPTION:Walnut Check-Up in the Santa Catalinas\n November 22\, 2017\nCarianne Campbell: carianne@skyislandalliance.org \n  \n\n\nBACKGROUND \nThe Santa Catalina grey squirrel (a subspecies of the Arizona grey squirrel) is in decline throughout the Catalinas and Rincons. Fire\, and competition with introduced Abert’s squirrels\, are thought to be some of the reasons for their lower numbers\, but we are hoping to give these beautiful animals a helping hand by improving some of their habitat on the mountain. With the help of the Forest Service and Borderlands Restoration\, we planted native walnut trees at several sites in the mountains to provide more of their favorite year-round food! Now we are going back to determine how many trees survived\, and to remove the cages we placed around the trees. \n\n\nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\n\nTRIP LOGISTICS \n\n9 AM: Meet with SIA staff at the south end of the Safeway parking lot in the Madera Village Shopping Center: NE corner of Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway.\nSaturday 4:00 PM: We will work throughout the day\, and wrap things up around 4 PM.\nSaturday 5:00 PM: We will arrive back at our meeting spot by 5:00 PM or so.\n\nTHE WORK \n\nThis project is rated as moderately strenuous; we will be carrying buckets of water and caging materials through steep\, uneven terrain.\n\nWHAT TO BRING \n\nCLOSED-TOE SHOES/BOOTS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS PROJECT. Due to the possibility of surface water in the project area\, you might want to wear shoes/boots that you dont mind getting wet and or muddy. These ponds will provide habitat for lowland leopard frogs (Lithobates yavapaiensis) and many other native bird\, bat\, dragonfly and butterfly species. Join us for a day\, or the entire trip\, as we build two ponds and enhance the surrounding habitat with native plantings! \n  \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n  \nPROJECT SCHEDULE & LOCATION \nWednesday: Meet at 1:30 p.m. at our office: 406 S 4th Ave\, Tucson\, at the SW corner of 4th Ave and 14th St. To carpool or caranan with us to the site. There is plenty of parking in our lot off 14th as well as along the streets. \nIf you would like come out on your own\, please meet us by 9:00 a.m. at the worksite Thursday-Saturday. \nWe will work throughout each day with a break for lunch\, and will try to be back to the office by 6:00 p.m. Sunday. \n  \nTHE WORK AND WHAT TO KNOWWe will be working to support Tom as he excavates and contours the ponds. This will include prepping the site\, digging and raking soil\, removing/salvaging vegetation from the project area\, and helping to install the new pond liner. We will also be installing native plants that will benefit pollinators and wildlife\, as well as help the site return to a natural appearance as soon as possible. Be prepared to get dirty\, maybe even muddy\, but rest assured that there will be tasks for all levels of ability. \nWHAT TO BRING \n  \nIf you are planning to ride out with us\, be prepared to camp through the weekend. If you are joining us on your own for a day or more\, come prepard with enought provisions to last throughout your trip. We will have access to bathrooms and water\, and SIA will provide our camp kitchen set-up. \n\nCamping gear; tent\, sleeping bag\, pad\, etc…\nWater\, snacks\, and meals. DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Project\nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will be hosting two 5-night spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O Ranch September 7-11 and October 5-9\, and a 3-night event November 9-11.  For each event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night.  For the September and October events\, spotlighting will conclude on Tuesday morning.  For the November event\, spotlighting will conclude on Sunday morning. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have some teams go out and spotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets.   Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during spotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn. DESCRIPTION:Arizona Antelope Foundation\nHabitat Project: Bonita\nSeptember 30th\, 2017\nProject Location: We will be working on private lands approximately 31 miles North of Wilcox and 1 mile West of Bonita\, AZ off the High Creek Road. \nProject Begins: Saturday\, September 30th. Please meet at camp at 8:00AM. This is a one day project. If you arrive after 8:00AM\, someone in camp will direct you to the project worksite. \nProject Activity: We will be modifying 3 miles of existing boundary fence between the KJ and Bonita Ranches. This will entail removal of the bottom strand of barbed wire and replacing it with smooth wire 16″ above the ground. The fence consists of wooden and metal t-posts\, along with various stay materials. We will fix unrepairable stays with new and add metal t-posts at required locations. We will be able to utilize ATV’s along the fence line. Volunteer drop off and vehicle parking is available at the start points Location is North of the High Creek Road\, approx 1 mile West of the Bonita Store. \nPronghorn Benefits: This effort is located in direct proximity to ongoing mesquite removal for the Bonita Grasslands NRCS/G&F restoration project with a goal of improving up to 10\,000 acres in the next 4 years. Over the past 7 years\, the areas adjacent to and within this project have been grubbed\, new waters and boundary fence installed. These projects will help ensure that resident pronghorn and mule deer can safely utilize open grassland corridors without interference due to fence line obstructions. It will assist in accomplishing a key portion of the overall Bonita Plains pronghorn travel corridor improvement project. \nMeals: Please provide your own lunch to eat in the field on Saturday. The AAF will provide dinner for all volunteers on Friday and Saturday nights and continental breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings. \nWhat to Bring: WORK GLOVES (the AAF will have a limited supply)\, snacks\, water\, personal gear\, orange safety vest (if you have one). \n\nDirections\nCamp site will be on USFS lands\, approximately 1.5 miles West of the High Creek Road/Sunset Loop Intersection. Access to the site is along a maintained travel corridor route\, the site is trailer friendly. DESCRIPTION:Pollinator Planting at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument\nSeptember 21 @ 10:00 AM – September 24 @ 8:00 PM\nBryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator: bryon@skyislandalliance.org \nTHE WORK:\nSky Island Alliance is teaming up with the National Park Service and Borderlands Restoration to restore a recently-burned slope near the main ruin loop at the monument. Volunteers will be installing native pollinator plants like milkweeds. The slope sits just above the riparian zone of the scenic Gila River and our efforts are essential to make sure these fragile soils are not lost via erosion. All tools will be provided by Sky Island Alliance. We’ll be bending\, digging\, and hauling materials on uneven surfaces and participants need to be prepared to get dirty. \nTO REGISTER\, CLICK HERE! \n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will camp at one of the campgrounds immediately down the road from the work area (TBD). Due to its remote setting\, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is a “You Pack it In\, You Pack it Out” area\, meaning there are no trash cans available for visitors. Once you see the access into the site\, you will understand. Participants are responsible for providing all camping gear (sleeping bag\, tent\, pad\, etc.) and food provisions for themselves for the duration of the project. \n\nOther important points: \nBring your own meals for the weekend – a minimum of 3 breakfasts\, 4 lunches\, and 3/4 dinners\, with snacks. \nPotable water is available in some areas such as the Visitor Center. Plan on bringing enough to satisfy your needs for the entire weekend just in case. \nBe prepared to unplug – there is no cell phone service at Gila Cliff Dwellings N.M. \nBring work clothes and appropriate close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may want sandals for walking in the river. \n\nPLEASE NOTE:\nThis is a family-friendly trip: let us know if you plan to bring any youngsters and if there are any special concerns.
