DESCRIPTION:AZGFD Black-footed Ferret Spotlighting\nSeptember 20-24th\n  \nThe Black-footed Ferret Project will again be hosting their fall spotlighting events in Aubrey Valley and on the Double O\nRanch\, and the project is going to host a 5-night event in September\, and a 5-night event in October. The dates will be\nSeptember 20th – 24th and October 18th – 22nd. For the September event\, spotlighting will begin on Thursday night\nSeptember 20th and conclude on Tuesday morning September 25th. For the October event\, spotlighting will begin on\nThursday night October 18th and conclude on Tuesday morning October 23rd. Fall events are held to assess the ferret\npopulation going into winter\, to trap dispersing kits\, and to trap older ferrets that need a canine distemper or plague\nbooster.\nThe ferret population is usually at its highest going into the winter\, so there is an increased chance to see and trap a\nferret. Because ferrets are being seen in areas where we normally do not spotlight\, we will have teams go out and\nspotlight these new areas to try and trap these ferrets. Besides ferrets\, other animals that could be observed during\nspotlighting include foxes\, badgers\, coyotes\, owls\, hawks\, porcupines\, skunks\, and pronghorn.\nPlease RSVP by Sept. 14th for the September event and Oct. 12th for the October event…\nPlease indicate what month(s) and night(s) you would like to spotlight\, indicate who else (First and Last name) will be\nattending with you\, Please\, indicate if you will be able to use your own vehicle\, and the vehicle capacity (4×4 vehiclle preferred but not required). DESCRIPTION:Wildlife Tracking Workshop – Fall 2017 – Aravaipa\nThursday\, October 19\, 2017 – Sunday\, October 22\,2017\nBryon Lichtenhan\, Field Coordinator: 520-624-7080 ext. 27 OR bryon@skyislandalliance.org \n  \nSAVE $100 IF YOU ARE A FULL-TIME STUDENT OR MEXICAN NATIONAL\nReduced Price = $195\n  \nJoin us for a four-day get-away in a spectacular Sky Island setting with Sky Island Alliance staff and regional guest experts.  Participants gain hands-on field instruction and theory in a variety of skills and techniques\, including: \n\nNatural history and conservation of regional animal species\, with emphasis on the jaguar\, Mexican gray wolf\, ocelot\, black bear\, mountain lion\, bobcat\, white-nose coati\, Mexican opossum\, badger\, desert tortoise\, and box turtle;\nWildlife track morphology\, structure and terminology;\nPhoto documentation;\nMotion-activated wildlife camera monitoring techniques;\nTrack casting and tracing techniques;\nAnimal gaits and movement; and\,\nHands-on experience with track identification in the field.  \n\n\nLOCATION:\nThis workshop will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Guesthouse in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve\, 50 miles northeast of Tucson\, Arizona (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours drive from Tucson or Phoenix). During the workshop\, we will take the opportunity to gather wildlife tracking data for Aravaipa Canyon Preserve. “Not only does the ranch sit over the main aquifer that supplies Aravaipa Creek\, it’s also an important corridor for wildlife traveling from the Galiuro Mountains to the Santa Teresa Mountains\,” says the Preserve’s manager\, Mark Haberstich. “We’ve actually seen elk on the preserve” — a rarity at the site’s elevation of 3\,300 feet. \n\nTRIP SCHEDULE: \n\n12 Noon Thursday: Participants have the option of meeting us at the Sky Island Alliance offices (406 S 4th Ave) at 12 pm on Thursday to catch a ride or carpool/caravan to the Aravaipa guesthouse.\n4 PM Thursday: Participants that wish to provide their own transportation to the guesthouse (high clearance vehicles recommended) should arrive around 4 pm.\n3 PM Sunday: Our workshop will be wrapped up\, and participants will be on their way home.\n6 PM Sunday: Participants riding back to Tucson with SIA will be returned to our offices by 6 pm on Sunday\, perhaps earlier.\n\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will have a limited number of beds available\, with plenty of spots for tent camping available as well. The guesthouse is equipped with a full kitchen\, but fridge space can become limited so bring a cooler\, just in case. There are also indoor bathrooms/showers available\, but be conscious of everyone’s needs and don’t plan on lengthy showers. \nCampsites are grassy areas located at the guesthouse and are vehicle accessible. High clearance vehicles are recommended.  Aravaipa Creek is only a short walk away from the camping area.  Potable water is available; water from area creeks should be treated prior to consumption. \nSIA will not be providing any meals during this trip; you will need to bring enough food and water for breakfast\, packable lunches\, dinners\, and any snacks you desire. This means that you will want to be prepared with nine meals: from Thursday dinner to Sunday lunch. \nThe majority of the weekend will be spent outdoors and you can expect to spend time sitting\, and walking or strolling along wet creeks and dry riverbeds as we look for tracks and other wildlife sign.  We provide some blocks of free time\, but the schedule calls for long days\, starting around 8am and ending around 7 or 8 at night. \nAll course materials are included.  You will receive Mark Elbroch’s field guide Mammal Tracks and Sign:  A Guide to North American Species\, a tracking ruler\, laminated wildlife track identification field cards\, and a workshop packet.  We provide a one-year membership to Sky Island Alliance for non-member participants\, including a subscription to our Restoring Connections newsletter.\n \nPLEASE NOTE: \nNo dogs or pets are allowed on this trip.  Participants are required to sign our volunteer release form.  Youth ages 13-17 are welcome if joined by an accompanying adult. Workshop registration will close one week before the first date of the workshop\, or when full.  Please register online and during checkout specify payment by credit card or check. \nSky Island Alliance offers Wildlife Tracking Workshops twice a year\, in both spring and fall.  Our workshops alternate between overnight camping and bed and breakfast style accommodations in different outdoor settings around the Sky Island region; cost can vary slightly based on amenities offered\, but every workshop is taught at the same high quality standard. \n***Cancelation policy:  Due to the limited space availability for this particular workshop\, we cannot provide refunds for cancelation.  However\, we can accept substitutions.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. \n\n\nFor more information\, please contact Bryon Lichtenhan at bryon@skyislandalliance.org.

DESCRIPTION:  \nNative Student Professional Development Program\nfor indigenous students interested in the Wildlife Profession\n  \nAs a scientific organization for professionals who manage and conserve wildlife and habitats\, The Wildlife Society (TWS) is increasingly concerned about the lack of ethnic and cultural diversity within the profession. Diversity is essential if the profession is to grow and meet the nation’s conservation challenges. The indigenous community has enormous potential to enrich diversity within the wildlife profession. The Wildlife Society believes that one of the most effective ways to support indigenous wildlife students is to give them the opportunity to attend TWS’s Annual Conference – the largest gathering of wildlife professionals in North America. The Society is therefore raising funds to enable indigenous students to attend the 24th Annual Conference\, to be held in Albuquerque\, NM Sept. 23-27\, 2017 though the Native Students Professional Development Program. \n\nIndividuals selected for this program will receive funds to help cover registration fees\, lodging\, meals and transportation to and from the conference. Participants will also receive a one-year membership in The Wildlife Society and become members of the Native People’s Wildlife Management Working Group. \n\nEligible students must be members of a Native American\, First Nations\, or Indigenous Tribe\, or identify as Native Alaskan or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander\, and currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in a relevant academic discipline such as wildlife biology or ecology. Applicants must display a record of academic excellence and a strong interest in pursuing a career in wildlife management or conservation. Qualified applicants will b evaluated by a panel. We unite as a diverse\, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good and for political leaders and policy makers to enact evidence based policies in the public interest. \nThe March for Science is a celebration of science.  It’s not only about scientists and politicians; it is about the very real role that science plays in each of our lives and the need to respect and encourage research that gives us insight into the world. \nNevertheless\, the march has generated a great deal of conversation around whether or not scientists should involve themselves in politics. In the face of an alarming trend toward discrediting scientific consensus and restricting scientific discovery\, we might ask instead: can we afford not to speak out in its defense? \nThere is no Planet B. Join the #MarchForScience. \n\n\n\nSCIENCE\, not SILENCE\nThe March for Science is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community. Recent policy changes have caused heightened worry among scientists\, and the incredible and immediate outpouring of support has made clear that these concerns are also shared by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Mischaracterization of science as a partisan issue\, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence\, is a critical and urgent matter. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted. \nOn April 22\, 2017\, we walk out of the lab and into the streets. \nWe are scientists and science enthusiasts. We come from all races\, all religions\, all gender identities\, all sexual orientations\, all socioeconomic backgrounds\, all political perspectives\, and all nationalities. Our diversity is our greatest strength: a wealth of opinions\, perspectives\, and ideas is critical for the scientific process. What unites us is a love of science\, and an insatiable curiosity. We all recognize that science is everywhere and affects everyone. \nScience is often an arduous process\, but it is also thrilling. A universal human curiosity and dogged persistence is the greatest hope for the future. This movement cannot and will not end with a march. Our plans for policy change and community outreach will start with marches worldwide and a teach-in at the National Mall\, but it is imperative that we continue to celebrate and defend science at all levels – from local schools to federal agencies – throughout the world. \nThe March for Science – Phoenix and Fair will begin at Cesar Chavez Memorial Plaza (Historic City Hall)\, 125 W. Washington St.\, in downtown Phoenix on April 22\, 2017 starting with a rally at 10:00. The March proper will start at 11:00 and proceed down Jefferson Street to 5th Street\, up to Washington Street and back to 1st Ave\, where the Science Fair and speakers will continue until 4:00 PM. Food trucks\, water\, toilet facilities and FUN will be provided! \nThe Phoenix March for Science is NOT JUST FOR SCIENTISTS – it is critical for anyone who supports science\, science education\, and science policy to join in this effort and stand with us as we advocate for our future.
